Cumulus and The Battery Electric at Asbury Lanes, 2/21/14

Yeah. It Was a Busy Friday Night.

So after catching The Ocean Heirs and Emily Kinney over at The Saint on Friday, I drove over to Asbury Lanes hoping that I hadn't missed the set from Seattle's Cumulus. Turned out they were just setting up as I walked in, so I managed to catch their whole performance.

I checked out the band's debut LP, I Never Meant It To Be Like This, earlier in the day and really liked what I heard. Cumulus have drawn comparisons to other indie-pop acts like Best Coast and Tennis, but I think their sometimes more rock and roll sound paired with Alexandra Niedzialkowski's voice reminds me a little more of what Hospitality did on their first record. The band's live performance delivered on the promise of their solid LP.

They seemed to enjoy the venue, too, as guitarist Lance Umble and bassist Leah Julius wore their bowling shoes throughout the set. I hope that means that we can get them to come back this way.

Asbury's The Battery Electric closed out the evening with a late set. All the "beautiful little babies" who stayed enjoyed a solid set of the band's whiskey-fueled, politically-charged rock and roll.

The Battery Electric will be spreading that sound to other parts of the country on a tour (with Little Dickman labelmates Hot Blood and T.V. Tramps) that will take them to Austin for South By Southwest. The bands will make tour stops as they make their way down to Texas and as they head back to New Jersey.
