Pentimento and Have Mercy Closed Out the Night at Asbury Lanes, 7/10/14 (PHOTOS)

"The Craziest Crowd We've Ever Played For"

It's July, so that means craziness here at CoolDad Music HQ until our annual August respite. The cooldaughters swim for their summer day camp every Tuesday and Thursday night of the month, and those things take a good two-plus hours. I've said before, though, that I love watching them swim; so that meant I'd miss the early sets from Thursday's show at Asbury Lanes. I would've loved to catch Corrina, Corrina but Scotch LaRock was on the job. You can check out what he had to say in his post.

I arrived just as New Brunswick's Gates were getting started, and they post-rocked me to the core. You don't necessarily get it from the records, but they are an animated bunch on stage. I'm not sure my pictures do them justice.

Thursday was the first night of a tour that, in addition to Gates, also features Buffalo's Pentimento and Maryland's Have Mercy. I'm going to admit that I was less than familiar with either band going into the show, aside from some quick studying up during the day. The same can't be said, however, of the rest of the crowd.

During each set, the crowd sang and fist-pumped along with the bands. Asbury Lanes wasn't packed out, but those that were there were bunched against the stage and involved with every note. There was plenty of "cry moshing" and stage diving.

While both bands work similar territory, I'd say that Have Mercy are slightly more aggressive, rough around the edges than Pentimento. The crowd was rowdier for them as well, freely jumping on stage and executing some ill-advised stage dives. I think I saw one guy go unimpeded to the floor. This prompted Have Mercy lead singer Brian Swindle to proclaim Thursday's crowd the craziest the band had ever seen.

I managed a few shots of both bands. Here are some highlights.
