New 7" from Screaming Females

"Wishing Well"

If you're even an occasional reader of this blog, then you know that I love guitar-based rock music. I'm old-fashioned that way, I guess. Over the last few years, Screaming Females' take on guitar-based rock has been one of my favorites. Marissa Paternoster is a real-life rockstar guitar hero, and I could listen to / watch her play all day.

To date, most of Screaming Females' output has been of the fiery, shred-tastic variety. Today, the band premiered "Wishing Well," which will be available as a 7" at stops on their tour with PUJOL, over at RollingStone.com.

I guess the track is kind of a change-up for the band. It's a little slower and dreamier than most of the songs in the Screaming Females catalog. But great guitar players -- J Mascis, Jimi Hendrix, Doug Martsch, whoever your favorite is -- possess a signature sound that's identifiable no matter what they're doing, and that's true here. Paternoster may be showcasing the twangier side of her G & L S-500, but her unique tone and style are still there in spades. And things get pretty loud during the chorus.

I feel like "Wishing Well" has been part of the band's live set for a while now. You can probably hear them play it live, and you should be able to pick up the 7", when Screaming Females come to Asbury Lanes with PUJOL on November 8th.
