What's Going On: 8/7, 8/8, 8/9 & 8/10, 2014

Modest Mouse!!

The last time I had the chance to see Modest Mouse, I had just returned -- I mean like minutes before -- from an overseas business trip; and I was just too exhausted to go. Tonight, I get a do-over when one of my favorite bands of all time play a sold-out show at Starland Ballroom. CoolMom -- a machine who made the cooldaughters' breakfast and lunch this morning and got them on the bus to camp before heading down to our nation's capital for some meetings -- will be joining me soon after the Metroliner pulls into Metropark tonight.

Don't worry if you didn't get tickets to Modest Mouse, though. There is plenty to do on Thursday that should keep you more than satisfied. Julian Fulton and The Zombie Gospel return to the stage at Asbury Lanes after a bit of a hiatus. Joining them will be Dollys, The Guru, Vundabar, and Big Neil. Sound Waves will be hosting a free going away party for Sean Marshall / CD release party for Lightning Jar at APYC. WBJB brings Peter Bradley Adams and Emily Grove to the beach in Belmar. Gregg Turner of Angry Samoans plays The Brighton. Who knows? Maybe he will inspire another Shock Mommies reunion. Led Zeppelin tribute band, Led Zeppelin 2, play the pony.

In non-musical Thursday-night happenings, FoCDM, animal lover, and all-around swell person, Allyson Dwyer, brings the NJ Premiere of The Ghosts in Our Machine to Red Bank's Bow Tie Cinemas. All profits from the event will go to benefit For The Animals Sanctuary. And, in a similar animal-friendly vein, Black Wine play an ASPCA benefit at The Court Tavern along with City Limits, Not the Bees, Loose Ends, and Saving Lives.

On Friday, Temples bring their psychedelic-era Beatles-inspired sound to Asbury Lanes. Heart are at The Count Basie Theatre. Scotch LaRock favorite, Owel, are part of a bill at The Court Tavern. Dentist (and I) venture to Brooklyn to play Shea Stadium (Dentist will be playing. Not me.) with Coastgaard, The Space Merchants, and Toy Cities. Andrew McMahon plays a sold-out show at The Pony. Dramarama are at The Wonder Bar. Hot Blood head to Newark to play with Ms. America (coming to The Brighton next week).

There is no let-up on Saturday when Sheer Terror come to Asbury Lanes. gods, BaBabes, and The Von Mons play what promises to be a great free show at APYC. East Orange, New Jersey's Lauryn Hill plays The Basie. Bus Buddies are at The Wonderloft.

Finally, Sunday features free shows at The Saint (Deal Casino / Monterey / Jamie Coppa) and Lakehouse Music Academy (Those Corn People, Cackhander Happy, Luke Henderiks, Great Barrier Reef). The Stone Pony Summer Stage has Umphrey's McGee.

Lots and lots of stuff all weekend. CoolMom and I will be enjoying ourselves for our first-ever trip to Starland tonight. If I start to feel carsick on the way up there, I'll just take some Dramamine. I just hope we don't run Out of Gas and can find some Convenient Parking. It should be interesting to spend some time in A Different City. CoolMom will bring a sweater in case we get stuck standing in The Cold Part of Starland. Have fun this weekend. Float On.
