Mayfair House Sessions: Renee Maskin & Dan Matlack

Renee Maskin (and friends) at the Little Dickman Records / CoolDad Music 2015 Holiday Benefit

"Static in the Signal"

Here's an interesting idea. Get some of your friends and favorite musicians to come over for an evening to write and record one song. Then put that song out there for everyone to hear. Dan Matlack has a home studio at his place in Bradley Beach's Mayfair House, and that's just what he decided to do.

Called "The Mayfair House Sessions," the first release is a collaboration between Matlack and Lowlight's Renee Maskin. "Static in the Signal" is a dark and stripped down slow burn. I envision it scoring a film sequence: Shot from the driver's perspective through the windshield. The car is the only one on a dark desert road. We can see dust or fog giving definition to the beams of the car's headlights as the dashes of the broken center-line shoot past on the pavement. One of the driver's hands is on the steering wheel, while the other fiddles with the old, analog radio tuner. Maybe we catch a glimpse of Maskin's hat in the corner of the rearview mirror. Or something.

It's a more than encouraging first effort for "The Mayfair House Sessions." With the wealth of talent in the area, I look forward to what comes out of there next.
