White Lung Release New Video. New Album, Paradise, Due May 6th.

"Hungry"

Vancouver, BC punk band, White Lung, released a new single yesterday and announced that they'd be releasing their fourth LP via Domino on May 6th. Paradise will be the follow-up to the short, sharp shock of intensity that was 2014's Deep Fantasy.

Deep Fantasy was one of my favorite records of 2014, and "Hungry" finds the band moving in a bit of a new direction. White Lung trade some of the manic intensity of their previous work for something that reveals a real evolution in songwriting. "Hungry" had me thinking of a band like The Replacements, who produced some of the greatest songs in rock music once they allowed Paul Westerberg to indulge some of his pop inclinations. That's not to say that "Hungry" is a simple pop song. Lead singer Mish Barber-Way still seethes throughout this rumination on fleeting fame and disposable culture.

The Justin Gradin-directed video for "Hungry" stars Amber Tamblyn and features cameos from members of Deap Vally and Deafheaven. Gradin co-wrote the video with Mish Barber-way.

Check out the video for "Hungry" below.

White Lung have also announced a spring tour that takes them to Austin for SXSW and closer to our neck of the woods for a release show at Brooklyn's Baby's All Right on May 7th.

We Have a Winner!

Second-Ever CoolDad Music Comment Contest

Thanks to everyone who commented or who just stopped by to have a look around the place. There can only be one winner, though, and that winner is Josh. I'll be sending Josh my extra copy of the Record Store Day 2012 Smugglers Way flexi-zine put out by Domino Records.

Congratulations, Josh!

Thank you to everyone who helped get the Facebook page to 100 Likes; and, once again, thank you to all of the commenters. I really enjoy hearing from and interacting with everyone, which is really the point of this. I may try to come up with a different contest format for the next time. Definitely open to ideas.

Comment Contest for Domino Records Smugglers Way Flexi-zine

Comment for a Chance to Win

A big thanks to everyone who liked or got their friends to like the CoolDad Music page on Facebook. As I said I would do all along, now that the page has reached the arbitrary number of 100 likes, I'm holding a contest for my extra, unopened copy of Domino Records' 2012 Record Store Day exclusive Smugglers Way flexi-zine.

Smugglers Way is extremely cool, and a year ago I became obsessed with acquiring it. So obsessed, in fact, that I ended up with two. It contains flexi-singles (square, floppy, acetate records that play on your turntable) from Dirty Projectors, Real Estate, Villagers, John Maus, and Cass McCombs in a variety of colors. The discs come packaged in a 24-page magazine that contains writing from Alex Bleeker of Real Estate and Laura Marling, Photography by Jana Hunter of Lower Dens, an original score by Owen Pallett, and a bunch of other illustrations, prose, and poetry from other Domino / Ribbon Music artists.

The rules are simple: Comment on this very post between now and Sunday, April 14th. I will randomly select a commenter who will be crowned the winner of The Second-Ever CoolDad Music Comment Contest and send them the prize. If you want a real chance to win, I'd advise against commenting anonymously.

That's it. Thanks again and good luck.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Like This Blog

This May Take A While

The Facebook likes for this blog's page have been pretty static. They've been hovering around 65, 66, 67 for some time. That's fine. I'm grateful for each one, and I'm happy that people come here to see what I have to say.

I thought it would be fun, though, to try and get the number a little higher; so I have a proposition: once the number of likes for CoolDad Music reaches 100, I'll run another comment contest. The prize will be my extra, unopened copy of the Record Store Day 2012 Smuggler's Way flexi-zine that Domino Records released. It's a cool, quirky thing and fun to have even if you don't own a turntable.

I'm sure everyone knows how to like a page on Facebook, but I've made it even easier for you and your friends by placing a little button just for that purpose over in the right-hand corner of this page:

You and your friends can click that, and we'll be another like closer to the contest.

Thanks. And, as always, thanks for reading.
