Rock and Roll Hair, July - December, 2018

Against Me!
Keep Growing

The year isn't quite over yet, and I'll probably get one or two more shots that could qualify for this list before we're done. For now, though, here are some of the Rock and Roll Hair shots from the second half of 2018. Dinosaur Jr., Screaming Females, Against Me!, the reigning champion RockNRoll Hi-Fives, and more.

Keep tossing those locks around.

Rock and Roll Hair, January - June, 2017

Ruby The Hatchet at The Stone Pony

First Half Hair

Yesterday was a good day. I felt kind of bad about not getting anything up on the site, but I did take a long bike ride. Then I spent the afternoon with CoolDad Music contributor and super solid bud, Allyson Dwyer. Came home and made a legit dinner for the entire family and started compiling the "Rock and Roll Hair" post for the first half of 2017.

This one includes some shots from SXSW back in March. The RockNRoll Hi-Fives, with a whole bunch of shows in March and April, just edged out Thelma & The Sleaze and Ruby The Hatchet by a score of 3-2 in the number of appearances. Also making it this time around are Fruit & Flowers, Charly Bliss, Screaming Females, Beach Slang, Mastodon, and more. We've got farewells to much-beloved bands here at CoolDad Music, dollys and The Everymen. No sadness, though. This post is supposed to be fun.

Keep tossing that hair, and I'm sure I'll catch you eventually.

Rock and Roll Hair: January-June, 2016

Ruby The Hatchet, Wonder Bar

Flow It. Show It.

It was a good week for Rock and Roll Hair. Both Ruby The Hatchet and War On Women inspired me to get this post up just in time for the start of the second half of 2016. This installment features both of those bands along with some of the usual suspects like The Battery Electric. There are also some new heads that I saw down in Austin during South By Southwest or at Brooklyn's Northside Festival.

Check these out and, I don't know, vote for your favorite or something. I've been getting away from the slideshow thing for a while now; so, if you'd just rather view all the photos at once, check them out in this Google Photos album.

Rock and Roll Hair: June-December, 2015

The Battery Electric from this past Saturday at The Saint.
Darlin' Don't You Go...

It's time for another installment of "Rock and Roll Hair." We've got some of the usual suspects (Marissa Paternoster, Alex Rosen, Lysa Opfer) along with some new blood (Beach Slang, Wolfasaurus REX); but I think the real star this time around is the fan at Asbury Lanes. You will be missed Asbury Lanes Fan.

You Know What's Always Fun? Rock and Roll Hair.

Priests' Katie Alice Greer at Knitting Factory BK in February.

Part 3

Here's some rock and roll hair from the first half of 2015. You can always count on The Battery Electric and Jozii from Deal Casino for some hair tossing. Both Marissa and King Mike from Screaming Females make it this time along with a few new entries and even a couple of wigs.

There are a lot more of these in the galleries. Feel free to pick through and find your favorites. If you think I missed one, post it in the comments.

Darlin', don't you go and cut your hair...

Rock and Roll Hair, Part 2 (Jun. - Nov.)

Even the audience gets into it this time around.

All The News That's Fit To Print

Several more months of pictures means several more months of "Rock and Roll Hair." We've got lots of the usual suspects here, namely The Battery Electric, Marissa Paternoster, Shellshag. But we've also got some new entrants, audience members, wigs, and a "Where's Waldo" moment featuring CoolMom.

Rock and Roll Hair

Photo Essay, I Guess

Taking pictures of indie rock bands gets you lots of images of people just kind of standing there. Every once in a while, I try to liven things up by turning the camera or the photo to some weird angle; but I'm kind of an indie rock photographer myself in that my pictures tend to be pretty straightforward documents of what happened.

It's cool, though, when someone does something to liven up the shot naturally. I find that "Rock and Roll Hair" is one of the best things for this. Sometimes I try to catch it, but I usually end up getting it by accident.

Here's a collection of some "Rock and Roll Hair" shots from the last year or so. I probably could've done a whole collection just on The Battery Electric -- especially Alex Rosen who gets shouted at on the street by kids in passing cars praising his locks -- but I decided to mix it up. There are bands like The Battery Electric and Diarrhea Planet whose manes start flying around from the first note. Then there are the people without particularly long hair -- like Screaming Females' Marissa Paternoster or GayGuy / StraightGuy's Bob Paulos -- who generate such huge amounts of energy that even their shorter haircuts get moving. And I had to include King Khan's wig.

Anyway, thought this would be fun.
