I Did Some Reviews and Met One of My Idols

I put a couple of reviews up at Speak Into My Good Eye this week.

First, I listened to the new album from Waxahatchee, Cerulean Salt, via the stream currently available over at NPR.  I loved the record almost as much as I loved American Weekend, and I'm really enjoying Waxahatchee's new, full-band sound.

Second, I attended the first night of Bob Mould's two-night run at New York City's Bowery Ballroom and wrote a review.  What I didn't mention in that review was that I had a chance to meet Mould and the rest of the band after the show, which was a real thrill for me.  After playing a long and animated set, Mould, Jon Wurster, and Jason Narducy couldn't possibly have been more gracious and friendly.  It was a great end to a fantastic evening.

Bob Mould and the band are doing another show at Bowery Ballroom tonight, and then they'll be appearing on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon tomorrow before taking their tour Down Under.

Tanlines Did Fallon

"All of Me"

Tanlines had one of my favorite albums of the year, and I forgot to mention them in my year-end post.  Mixed Emotions also produced one my favorite singles of the year in "All of Me."

I love the record, but I've often wondered how the duo's electronically embellished pop would translate live.  Well, last night they brought "All of Me" to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for their television debut and sounded great.  You can check out the performance over at The (sadly, soon-to-be-gone) Audioperv.

Bringing Up Daughters

When did the music that the kids listen to become so, I don't know, uncool?

I've been trying to introduce my kids to the music that I like in the hopes that the corporate pop machine won't latch onto them like some facehugger from the Alien films.  This effort has been met, mostly, with failure.  CoolDaughter #1 does love Belle and Sebastian's If You're Feeling Sinister and the occasional song here and there that she hears on the old satellite radio.  CoolDaughter #2, on the other hand, is having none of it.  She is a pop princess through and through and knows the lyrics to most of the songs topping the charts.

It's pretty sad when the best thing I can hope for is that they'll prefer Avril Lavigne or Kelly Clarkson to Karmin or Cobra Starship.

Anyway, once CD #2 gets a load of this, I expect to hear, "Play it again, Daddy!" about a thousand times this weekend.

I don't hate this song at all... ...yet.
