New Song from Cayetana (and An Awesome Cover)

Tired Eyes

I've been waiting for a while for new music from Philadelphia's Cayetana. Nervous Like Me is still in heavy rotation for me, and the new songs I heard Augusta Koch perform at Russo Music had me looking forward to something from the band.

Today, Cayetana premiered a couple of tracks over at Noisey. They make up the 2-song Tired Eyes EP. The first, "Freedom1313," contains a sentiment I know all too well: "Doing what you love won't make you money, and doing what you hate will make you full." Like many of the songs on Nervous Like Me, "Freedom1313" rides on top of Allegra Anka's swirling bass. It was that bass that had me thinking of New Order more than once over the course of listening to Cayetana's debut. And, wouldn't you know it? The second song here is a cover of my favorite New Order song of all time, "Age of Consent."

Asian Man records are doing a one-time vinyl 7" pressing of the EP. I've got a blue one on the way already. Cayetana are celebrating with a release show at Philly's PhilaMOCA on January 23rd with Mannequin Pussy, Katie Ellen, and Jeff Riddle & The Bella Vista Social Club.

Sleepies, Weird Wild World, 2012

Quick First Impression

Over at Noisey, they've got the full album stream of Sleepies, Weird Wild World.  I've been waiting for this one since being introduced to the "Evil Radio Edit" of single "Seriously."

Produced by The Men's Ben Greenberg, Weird Wild World is smart, funny, slightly off-kilter punk.  Songs like "Cool Boy," "Strange Feelings," and "Waste Water" show a level of creativity and an attention to songcraft that make you think that maybe this isn't a typical punk band.  Thomas Seely's guitar and, especially, vocals are front and center, but the virtuoso rhythm section of John Intrator (bass) and Max Tremblay (drums) -- particularly on songs like "Got a Way" and "Terra Firma" -- is a huge part of Sleepies' unique sound.

And the instrumental break in the unedited, album version of "Seriously" does a good job of summing up the personality of Sleepies in about a minute and fifteen seconds.

Weird Wild World will be available next Tuesday via GODMODE and on vinyl from 16oh.
