Pics of Smalltalk at Asbury Lanes, 7/18/14

Performance Number Three

Neptune City's Smalltalk played their third-ever performance at Asbury Lanes on Friday night. The hometown crowd turned out in force to catch them along with fellow Jersey Shore band Dead Precedents, San Francisco's Great Apes, Philly's Ma Jolie, and Delaware's Plow United.

Every band turned in a great set; and the crowd included a who's who of the Asbury music scene, including some folks squeezing in the opportunity to check out the show before heading to their own sets in other parts of town.

Smalltalk's set included tracks from the band's first EP, songs from their just-released second three-song collection, and songs destined for their third effort. Everything had Smalltalk's trademark 80s-alternative inspired sound, which brings me back to about 1986-87 whenever I hear it. (Interesting aside, if you'd like to hear Smalltalk drummer Jamie Goldfarb talk -- at length -- with our good friend Gentleman Jim Norton about 1986, then you should check out the most recent installment of That Totally Bitchin' Podcast.)

The evening was a warm-up of sorts for the big events of today. Smalltalk guitarist Pete Steinkopf will be doing his other job as guitarist for The Bouncing Souls when the band take to The Stone Pony Summer Stage with The Menzingers and Ted Leo to celebrate their 25th anniversary this evening. After that, our beloved Asbury Lanes hosts an after party featuring Lost In Society for just $5.

I tried out the tiny built-in flash on my camera for a few shots of Smalltalk last night. Check out highlights below as well as a few more up at Flickr.
