Sleepies, More Humans EP, 2013

EP Review

I got pretty excited yesterday when I saw that NYU, my undergrad alma mater, will be hosting a "Pre Finals Punk" show on December 5th featuring Ceremony, Perfect Pussy, White Lung, and Sleepies. Tickets are just 5 bucks. Now I have to figure out when I can go get them from NYU Ticket Central and if I'll actually be able to make the show.

I've seen Ceremony, and I'm definitely interested in seeing Perfect Pussy and White Lung. The big draw for me here, though, is Sleepies. I've really loved everything this Brooklyn band has done since their 2012 single "Seriously" ("I take this all verrry seriously.") became kind of my personal corporate drone theme song. Yesterday's announcement reminded me that I'd been spending a lot of time with the band's recent four-song EP, More Humans (GODMODE).

"Big Rip," "Dig," and "Plant Life" illustrate well the band's meticulously crafted, innovative, and intelligent punk. The songs all feature the band's driving basslines, frantic guitar work, and sneering vocals. Together they take the listener on a jerky, jittery ride.

The EP closes with an homage to an obvious influence on the band, a blistering cover of Public Image Ltd's "Annalisa" that spends its last three minutes or so careening and creaking to a close.

I'm going to do what I can to get to that NYU show. If you can't make it, then you should check out the EP either via GODMODE's Soundcloud or by picking up one of the limited cassette copies from the GODMODE store.

Now, to figure out how to get Sleepies to come to Asbury Park...
