Skate & Surf Comes Home
This weekend, CoolDaughter #1 has her first long-course swim meet of the year. Skate and Surf returns to Asbury Park. And I almost forgot that I was going to see one of my all-time favorites.
Things get started tonight with the free Sound Waves show at Asbury Park Yacht Club featuring pop from Austin City and Geno & The Jukebox. Kevin Kinsella plays The Saint.
On Friday, New Brunswick's Court Tavern has a good bill featuring Modern Chemistry, For The Plane, Ghost House, Atikas Arras, Your Gentlemen, and Hot Sweats. Surf instrumentalists Plato Zorba play for free at Langosta, and The Saint rocks with Hammer Fight's tour kickoff show that also includes The Battery Electric, Cognitive, Slasher Throat, and Burial Mound. Dark City Entertainment brings Kid Felix, Buzzard Wagon, Gay Guy / Straight Guy and Champagne Black to the Wonder Bar.
2014's Skate and Surf Festival kicks off its return to Asbury Park at 2pm on Saturday with Midtown, Brick + Mortar, Knuckle Puck, and more. After parties happen at The Saint and The Wonder Loft following the last notes of the day. Boston garage rockers Lyres are at The Brighton with help from Insomniacs and The Grip Weeds. CoolMom and I will be at The Stone Pony -- me in full hero-worship mode -- for one of my all-time favorites, Built To Spill.
Skate and Surf continues through Sunday and brings Canadian hardcore greats Fucked Up to the Asbury Oceanfront along with New Found Glory and another performance by Midtown.
Now, to convince CoolMom that we need to leave early for The Stone Pony on Saturday to make sure we can get a spot right up front again.
UPDATE (5/16): Yesterday, I neglected to mention the Jersey Shore Festival taking place all weekend in Seaside Heights. The 3-day, free event features tons of bands -- Deal Casino, Prehistoric Forest, Blisstique, Vextion, Pocketful, Paris Under Fire, and more -- playing at The Aztec, EJ's, Captain Hook, and Spicy's Cantina. Seaside is back and ready for a big summer.
