Teen Girl Scientist Monthly, We Run With Gangs, 2014

Album (or is it an EP?) Review

Without getting too into it, a couple of things yesterday made me feel a little angry and protective of the cooldaughters and their well-being. I've become pretty cynical about a lot of things over the years; so I try to keep my perspective by doing (and voting for), quite simply, what I believe to be in the best interests of the women in my life. It makes things easier.

I was doing my usual scouring of things on the Internets this morning when I came across a recent episode of BreakThru Radio TV featuring Brooklyn's Teen Girl Scientist Monthly. If you've never checked out BTRtv, then you should. It's turned me onto several up and coming bands.

Teen Girl Scientist Monthly's name appealed to me. I've got girls. One's almost a teen. CoolMom, with her Ph.D. in economics, qualifies as a scientist. It would be cool if the girls read a magazine called Teen Girl Scientist Monthly. And the song featured in the episode -- "Dark Rip" -- was good. It had kind of a Modest Mouse meets Los Campesinos! vibe going.

To Bandcamp!!!

The latest release from Teen Girl Scientist Monthly, We Run With Gangs, is a 23-minute "mini album" released on January 1st as a thank you to all of the friends that helped TGSM release 2013's (maxi? regular-size?) album, Modern Dances. Each song on the record is dedicated to a particular individual like "Greg" or "Deborah!" or "Stu! Stu!"

The songs are exuberant, fun, and kind of nerdy in the best way possible. The Brooklyn six-piece mix and match the sounds of pop-punk, indie rock, and early 80s Elvis Costello or Go Gos-ish new wave on songs like "Water" -- which contains the great line "Dear mouth of all the open sky: Please eat my high school" -- or "These Days." The title track is a sing along (and play along, thanks to the band's providing the chords right there on Bandcamp) garage rocker that let's everybody get in on the fun.

TGSM trade male and female vocals as often as they switch between styles, which was my original impulse for making the Los Campesinos! comparison. Stylistically, though, TGSM are much more upbeat than the emo LC!

When the cooldaughters get home today, I'll put this on for them to see what they think. I have a feeling they're going to like it. It's already made me feel a bit less cynical.

We Run With Gangs is available as a Name Your Price download from TGSM's Bandcamp page, and the band promise that their second official LP will arrive later this year.
