What's Going On: 10/16, 10/17, 10/18 & 10/19, 2014

A packed weekend with local performances from The Orwells, The Battery Electric, Diarrhea Planet, Hey Anna, Smalltalk, The Mischief Kids, and Hot Blood.

Sayonara CoolMom

That subtitle is lame, I know; but CoolMom is leaving for Japan on Saturday afternoon, which means that I'm pretty well shut down for shows from Saturday until next weekend. If I can find a sitter for this Saturday night, I may be OK for this weekend; but this would definitely be a good week to get me your recorded material. My evenings should be free for listening.

I'm good for Thursday night, though. Things get started with a great show at Asbury Lanes featuring Cheap Girls, Beach Slang, Signals Midwest, and Lee Corey Oswald. The big attraction on that bill for me is Beach Slang who, as Scotch LaRock told you, released two seven-inches this year that are topping our charts here at CoolDad Music.

Also on Thursday, Lost Romance kick off their tour at Jersey City's Lamp Post. The Smithereens' Pat DiNizio continues his Langosta residency. The Mischief Kids help out Authority Zero at The Saint along with The Bastard Suns and The Holy Terror. GWAR is at Starland.

Lots of tough, tough choices on Friday night as The Orwells and Skaters come to Asbury Lanes with help from our buds in Smalltalk. The Ribeye Brothers and Ba Babes play for free at APYC. The energetic and entrepreneurial Teenage Halloween makes a trip to Montclair to play The Meatlocker with Days N Daze, The Best Of The Worst, Truman, and Fight For Your Friends! Dark City Entertainment presents another "Live and Local" with We're Ghosts Now, Bo Ningen, Public Access T.V., Hey Anna, and Amigos, Amigos! There are some lofty expectations for the wonderful super secret show featuring The Phuss (TX), The Battery Electric, Hot Blood, and The Mischief Kids.

Friday is also the first day for Blow Up Radio's 8th annual Banding Together Internet music festival and webathon to benefit the Spondylitis Association of America. Blow Up Radio's Lazlo has pulled together over 70 NJ musicians for the four-day event to help raise money to combat the painful and debilitating condition known as Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Finally on Friday, Speak Into My Good Eye will be officially releasing their 24-hour songwriting challenge comp that features contributions from over 30 NJ artists, including many of our favorites. They'll be at Asbury Lanes for The Orwells and to celebrate.

Starting at 1pm on Saturday, Asbury Underground presents a series of free, acoustic performances by local artists. 36 artists will be playing at 18 different venues around Asbury's downtown.

Also on Saturday, Dentist make their way to Circuit City (ask a punk) for a show with another favorite of ours, Sink Tapes. Agent Orange come to Asbury Lanes with help from Architect, Killer Waves, and Black Flamingos. JEFF The Brotherhood play Brighton Bar with Diarrhea Planet, brick mower, and Trans Charger Metropolis. Newfound Glory is at Starland with Candy Hearts and others. Little Dickman Records will co-present a show at NYC's Piano's featuring The Phuss and The Battery Electric.

On Sunday, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band come to Count Basie Theatre. Italy's Joycut are at The Saint with Microfossils, Chemtrail, and Maeby Funk. Rock photographer extraordinaire, Danny Clinch, holds the free release party for his new book, Still Moving, at The Stone Pony.

Whew... Lots of stuff. As I said, after this weekend, I'll be in full at-home mode; so send me those sounds.
