Quick Thought on "Put Your Number In My Phone"

Creepily Beautiful

I've been working on the "Favorite Songs Of 2014 (So Far)" playlist and trying to think of what I'll do for end of year listicle-type posts. One song that I keep coming back to is Ariel Pink's "Put Your Number In My Phone" off of Pom Pom. Other than "Lipstick," I don't think I've heard anything else from the record.

I really like the song. Initially, I liked it just because it's a really great twee-pop type song like something maybe Belle and Sebastian would do. One could totally take it at face value and be done with it.

As I listen to it more, though, it becomes a little darker and creepier for me. I get this image of Pink putting on some calculated, nice, sensitive guy persona just to pick up girls. That's not that unusual, but the song is so sweet on its face that it takes on a "...doth protest too much" vibe, making the narrator almost a little scary. It makes the song into this kind of cynical, cold-hearted thing for me. The voicemail that serves as a bridge is the giveaway, I think. Or I'm just an overly suspicious person.

Anyway...

I've never had a particular like or dislike for anything that Pink's done before, but this one sticks with me. Great songwriting.

I'm posting the lyric video, so you can draw your own conclusions. I just watched the official video for the first time today, and I think it could definitely influence your perception.

So lets call this the #1 Song That, At First, Sounds Like A Catchy, Throwaway Pop Song But Really May Be Something Kind Of Seedy And Creepy Of 2014.
