Smalltalk, III, 2014

EP Review

It's nice when people keep their promises. Back in June, when I spoke to Zak Kaplan and Jamie Goldfarb of Smalltalk, the pair mentioned that they'd like to do 3 EPs by the end of the year. Last week, Smalltalk delivered on that promise with the online release of III.

The set opens with "Spellbound." The song departs a bit from the jangle of the earlier EPs, going for a bit of a psychedelic feel with a big guitar solo to close things out. "Like You" gets back to some jangly guitar, combining it with a wall of sound into a poppy mix about trying to get over someone. Closer "Indecipherable" brings in the big guitar riffs again as Zak Kaplan sings about not being able to understand someone who just doesn't seem to be holding up their end of the relationship.

I feel like the songs on III are a little bigger and noisier compared to Smalltalk's previous two releases. It works well here, and the epic sound adds to the overall melodrama.

You can stream / purchase III over at Smalltalk's Bandcamp page. Smalltalk are also taking pre-orders for a vinyl release. Full disclosure: The band used one of my photographs for the center label on the disc. I'm flattered and ecstatic that they thought of me, and it will be cool to watch my picture spin around on my turntable. I've been hearing these songs live for a while now, though, and I'd be buying the thing no matter what. Together, Smalltalk's three releases comprise one of my favorite albums of the year.

You can catch Smalltalk at Asbury Lanes on 12/26 when they play the after party for that night's Bouncing Souls Home For The Holidays Show.
