Hearts Bleed Radio: 4-Track Challenge. Returning This Spring.

Stephen Perry and The Planes at Bar Matchless in June of 2014.

Lots of Stuff for While You Wait

Last spring, when I was in Brooklyn covering Northside Festival, I spent an evening at Bar Matchless for one of the weekend's Hearts Bleed Radio Showcases. Run by Stephen Perry who plays in a few bands -- most notably The Planes, probably -- Hearts Bleed Radio is a blog whose whole purpose is to provide an outlet for up and coming bands through featuring them at the site and booking shows like that one back in June.

Another cool project run by HBR is the Four-Track Challenge. Bands are invited to submit a 12-24 minute EP recorded on nothing but an analog 4-track. The last phase of the challenge ended in November and received submissions from all over the world totaling 41 EPs, all available as free downloads. You can pick through the trove of music over at the Bandcamp page for the challenge, but several HBR writers have put together "best of" lists to give you a significant but more manageable taste.

The project is on a bit of a hiatus now, so there's plenty of time to familiarize yourself with what's been posted so far. Stephen promises that things will start up again in the April / May timeframe, and it would be really cool to get some NJ representation up there. Anyone who has questions about the project can join the project's Facebook group or send an email to heartsbleedradio@gmail.com. Also, you can stay tuned here for more details as they become available. In the meantime, enjoy killing several mornings / afternoons / evenings discovering some of the DIY sounds curated by the project.

I'm still working my way through everything, but I like this one:
