Light of Day

It's a long weekend for some of us, and Light of Day, which raises funds for Parkinson's research, kicks into high gear. CoolMom comes back from her trip to China. The cooldaughters have a 2-day swim meet. Busy, busy.

A jam-packed weekend kicks off on Thursday when The Mercury Brothers, Black Sox Scandal, Jack Romanov, and Here For The Night play Brigton Bar. The Great Depression are at Montclair's Meatlocker with diet, Halicarnassus, and Altered Cross. Light of Day gets going with Willie Nile, Dramarama, The Weeklings, Jill Hennessy Band, and Billy Walton Band at House of Independents. Quincy Mumford & The Reason Why kick off The Saint's Light of Day weekend with Dark City Strings, Rose Boulevard, Geena & Dragster, The Overgrowns, and Dan Matlack. Wonder Bar has a Light of Day Super Jam Deluxe from Sandy Mack and lots of friends.

Daughter Vision, Puppy Grease, Strange Things Done In the Midnite Sun, and Ray Suhy, Alex Silvergold & Rolando Alverado hit Brighton Bar on Friday. Holy City Zoo hold the No Bunting record release at Jersey City's The Citizen with Cicada Radio, and Ken Dipoto. Hudson County is hopping as Overlake, Dentist, and NO ICE play Maxwell's Tavern and The Battery Electric hit Porta JC with Wyldlife. Semiotics play J House in Bruns with Milkmen, Cherry Mellow, The World's Afterparty, and Ragged Lines. Hodera, Podacter, MonsterBad, and Terraveer play acoustic at Naner Manor. Our buds over at Speak Into My Good Eye host a showcase at Piano's in NYC featuring The Black Clouds, Crazy & The Brains, Those Mockingbirds, Dead Stars, and Darkwing. Ratatat are at Starland. Have A Good Season hold their EP release show at Red Bank Rehearsal with OFFTOP, Teenage Halloween, In Angles, Grand Mariner, and Corrina, Corrina.

Light of Day-wise on Friday we've got Remember Jones doing another sold out live performance of Amy Winehouse's Back to Black at HOI. Langosta Lounge hosts the free and jam-packed Acoustic Carousel. The Saint rocks hard with New Theory, Negative Sky, VSSLS, and Age 9 and Friends. Jessie Malin is at The Stone Pony for the Light of Day Asbury Angels induction.

Saturday now. It's Asbury Underground: Light of Day Edition in downtown Asbury all afternoon. Steve Forbert is at House of Independents for an early show. The Saint's got two shows with The Voodudes and Women of Song early and Billy Hector, Stolen Rhodes, and more late. Wonder Bar has Asbury Blues Early and Surfer's Garage featuring Ribeye Brothers, The Doughboys, The Beachnuts, and Black Flamingos in the evening. The Band tribute band The Weight play The Stone Pony. The Smithereens headline Light of Day's sold-out main event at The Paramount with Willie Nile, Joe Grushecky, Milly, and many of the names from throughout the weekend.

In non-Light of Day action, The Cold Seas, Denizens of Soil, Fun While You Wait, and Pioneer The Eel make up a solid bill at Court Tavern on Saturday. Morningside Lane, Coolshark, and Carter Henry are in JC at The Citizen. Tiki Lounge in New Brunswick hosts a benefit for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital featuring Semiotics, P-Funk North, Flammable Animals, and more. Also on Saturday, Perennial Reel play their final show. That one's at Candy Barrel in New Brunswick and features Professor Caveman, Morus Alba, Kadian Quartet, and Milkmen.

An unusually packed-out Sunday brings the continuation of the 2-day Asbury Underground. The Light of Day Songwriters by the Sea Boardwalk Crawl goes from The Watermark to Langosta to McLoone's all day. The Saint comes at us again with two shows. Musicians on a Mission present Accidental Seabirds, Caroline Reese & The Drifting Fifth, Justina & Alina, Me & Bobby D, and Running Dog Band at noon. They close things out with Des & The Swagmatics, The F.L.O.W., Shady Street Show Band, and Black Suburbia in the evening.

Also on Sunday, YJY play BoMA in New Brunswick with Rita Fishbone, Voirvoir, steve., and Mind In Bloom. Seaside Caves and Volt Direction are at Brooklyn's St. Vitus with Tiers.

There's gotta be something on there that catches your fancy. Maybe I'll see you out there.
