Speedy Ortiz Released a New Single, Announced a New EP, Are Playing Wonder Bar with Hop Along and Two-Inch Astronaut TOMORROW, 5/10

"Death Note"

Massachusetts indie rock foursome, Speedy Ortiz, have released a new single just as they head out on tour. "Death Note" is the first track from the band's upcoming Foiled Again EP (6/3, Carpark Records). Foiled Again serves as a companion to last year's excellent Foil Deer, and "Death Note" is one of the outtakes from those sessions. The four-track EP also includes another outtake, "Emma O," and two remixes of album cut "Puffer."

"Death Note" is another entry in the Speedy Ortiz catalog of lyrically dense and dark but strangely accessible songs. Informed by some of the icons of classic indie rock like Stephen Malkmus and Liz Phair, Speedy Ortiz have always played right into a very sweet spot for me. CDM contributor, Allyson Dwyer, will probably be thrilled to learn that the song's title comes from an anime of the same name.

Tomorrow, the band's tour brings them to Asbury Park's Wonder Bar for a co-headlining show with Philly's Hop Along that also includes Maryland's Two Inch Astronaut. Regular readers will remember that Hop Along's Painted Shut was one of my favorite albums from last year. I've been looking forward to this show since it was announced. That's a rare all-ages show at Wonder Bar, and it looks like tickets are still available.
