...and a New Single from Lowlight Before We Go

"Bones"

Lowlight singer, songwriter, and guitarist Renee Maskin always wears a hat and always carries a flask. Whenever I see her out and about in Asbury Park, we talk about work, life, music. But when she gets onstage with her band, a glass of whiskey in her hand and her guitar around her back, she inhabits the characters in her band's songs. Maskin takes on a personality when Lowlight play that's drastically different from the soft-spoken friend that I was just talking to in the audience. She and the band commit; and that commitment comes through on "Bones," the first single from Lowlight's upcoming debut full-length Where Do We Go from Here.

"Bones" is characterized by the dreamlike synths of Dana Sellers. They give the effect of wandering through life's highs and lows in a haze or, maybe, being carried along them involuntarily by some force like water or wind. Colin Ryan's subtle brush of drums, Rey Rivera's just-enough bass, and Derril Sellers's lightly distorted guitar enhance the whole waking dream feel. Maskin's vocals are like a voice in your head.

The band recorded all the songs on Where Do We Go from Here in the the Sellers' home studio; and, in something that doesn't happen often, they managed to capture on "Bones" that writhing force that wraps itself around you during their live shows.

Where Do We Go from Here is due from BNS Sessions on August 26th. Lowlight just headed out on their first big tour, but they'll be back home in time to celebrate the release of Where Do We Go from Here with a show at Asbury Park Yacht Club on August 27th that also features The Jolly Daggers and Francis Lombardi.
