"Spirit Was"

Formed at SUNY Purchase back in 2011, LVL UP write songs democratically. Each of the members -- Mike Caridi (guitar), Dave Benton (guitar), Nick Corbo (bass), and Greg Rutkin (drums) -- contributes equally to the band's output. LVL UP blend the different perspectives of each member into a sound that draws heavily on the Classic Indie Rock of bands like Pavement, Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, and more. 2014's Hoodwink'd exemplifies this approach as the album moves seamlessly among a disparate set of influences while hanging together as a whole.

This summer, LVL UP announced that their next LP, Return To Love, would be their debut for Sub Pop. The album is due on September 23rd; and, today, LVL UP give us its third single.

"Spirit Was" features an understated guitar line mixed with background noise and deadpan lyrics as it harkens back to the time that made me fall in love with indie rock. It sounds like a bit of a reflection on lost youth -- "You look the same, but half-dead, and acting your age" -- and gives off a vibe of aimlessness and lack of direction.

LVL UP come to Asbury Park tonight, September 7th, when they play The Saint with dollys and Secret Mountain. Doors for that show are at 7:30pm. Have a listen to "Spirit Was" below, and I'll see you at the show.
