The Battery Electric (Kind of) Surprise-Released a New EP

Got Your Soul

One of the most interesting things about Asbury Park's The Battery Electric is the way they combine old-school rock, punk rock, and soul. Over the course of a Battery Electric live set, you'll get chugging, thrashing rock and roll numbers mixed with covers of Sam Cooke and Etta James.

With their last two EPs, The Battery Electric have kind of deconstructed their sound. Back in May, the band gave us Lose Control, a seven-song set that highlighted their affinity for forebears like The Stooges, The MC5, and Turbonegro. Earlier this week, The Battery Electric released the three-song Got Your Soul, which -- rather than being a reference to Satanism, though you'd be forgiven for thinking that -- explores some of the band's more soulful inclinations.

Recorded and produced by Tim Boyce of Predator Dub Assassins, Got Your Soul sees The Battery Electric bringing in keyboards and a horn section comprised of Bruce Krywinski, Anders Carlson, and Chris Fitz to arrive at a sound that's smoother and more soulful than anything they've released to date. Vocalist and frontman Ron Santee sounds absolutely sweet on opener "Need Ya," and "Maybe" could have come out of the Asbury Park scene sometime in the early 70s. Brent Bergholm's guitar plays off the horn section to make "Nobody's Fool" a hair-whipping ass-shaker to close things out.

The band pushed out Got Your Soul in a bit of a surprise, without much advance notice, on August 30th. You can grab it now from your favorite online music retailer.
