Hope you're enjoying the day that celebrates the fact that "May the fourth" kinda sounds like a famous phrase from a beloved film. I'm sure that Disney appreciates all the free advertising on social media in the run-up to Episode VIII -- which I will, most likely, see on release day, December 15th. While we wait for that, we've still got a few months of shows to look forward to, starting with this very weekend.
Tonight, Sharkmuffin take over Bond St. Basement in Asbury Park to celebrate the release of their sophomore LP, Tsuki. I'll have more to say about the record tomorrow when it officially comes out on Little Dickman Records; but, for now, I'll just tell you that it is a major step forward for the band whose live shows are a sight to behold. Joining them on that bill are Jersey boys, The Off White.
Also on Thursday, Janet LaBelle and NGHTCRWLRS are at The Footlight in Queens with Oxenfree and Gillian. Levy & The Oaks are playing The Saint with Nick Ryan and Ernest.
Friday is May 5th, and it's a great day to celebrate the innumerable and invaluable contributions to American culture made by Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans. Just don't drink and drive or do anything stupid. It's another Aloha Friday at Anchor's Bend with Black Flamingos. The Tide Bends, Gringo Motel, and Xol Azul are at 10th Avenue Burrito in Belmar. The Asbury Hotel hosts The Porchistas, Blind Lion, and Justin Franco. Eastbourne, P-Funk North, and Big Mind come to Long Branch's Brighton Bar. The Pietasters are at Crossroads in Garwood with Hub City Stompers. Monty Hall in Jersey City has Super Snake (ft. members of Trophy Scars and The Banner) along with Tiger Flowers, bigbutt, and Debbie Downer. John Eddie returns to The Stone Pony. LKFFCT, Rosey Bengal, NGHTCRWLRS, and ManDancing continue the trend of shows at Stosh's in Fair Lawn.
CoolDad Music is presenting Dentist, American Trappist, and Toy Cars at APYC on Friday. The free show is a homecoming for both Dentist and Toy Cars, who have been on tour, and another chance to catch the latest project from Joe Michelini, formerly of River City Extension. It's free and will be a blast.
The Asbury Park Punk Rock Flea Market returns on Saturday. The RocknRoll HiFives will be performing, along with Sharp Violet and Steve and The Not Steves, upstairs in The Overlook space starting around noon. Pkew Pkew Pkew and The Moms play Asbury Park Brewery. Millhill Basement in Trenton has Iron Chic, Nervous Triggers, Tiltwheel, and Witches With Dicks. Lowlight play a hometown show at Metuchen's Old Franklin schoolhouse with Afraid Brigade, Bombshell, Winter, and ManDancing. RocknRoll HiFives head from Asbury up to Highland Park for a show at Pino's with Magic Mountain. Romanelli's Italian Eatery in Madison hosts its first-ever evening of live music with Cold Weather Company, Above The Moon, and Little Engineers. Hollis Brown, Lost Leaders, and Modern Crowds are at The Saint. The Damned come to The Stone Pony. Cymbals Eat Guitars, Colton Kayser, and Tyler Sarfert play Wonder Bar in a show presented by The Project Matters.
It's a busy Sunday with The Off White heading to Brooklyn's Cape House for a show with Big Bliss, Heinous Orca, and Sic Tic. The Mercury Brothers, Pamela Flores, Zach Westfall, and Rachel Ana Dobken play Danny Clinch's Transparent Gallery on Sunday afternoon. Flemington DIY hosts Spowder, Izzy True, Gavin Riley, and Smoke Machine. Stuyedeyed come to Langosta Lounge for a show with Foes Of Fern and Girl. David Ross Lawn holds a release show and listening party for his new EP at Parlor Gallery in Asbury.
