New Superchunk! Benefits Planned Parenthood.

"I Got Cut" b/w "Up Against the Wall"
Superchunk -- really one of the best rock and roll bands around -- have released their first new music in four years. It's a 7" single that features new song "I Got Cut" on the A-side with a cover of the Tom Robinson Band's "Up Against the Wall" on the B-side.
The physical release consists of 500 copies whose sales will go to benefit Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the regional chapter serving Superchunk's home state of North Carolina. 300 of the copies are on traditional, black vinyl (JUST SOLD OUT). 180 already sold-out copies are on pink vinyl. The remaining 20 copies will be getting custom sleeves designed by 20 prominent, contemporary artists and will be auctioned to raise money for Planned Parenthood via Paddle8 starting on June 15th.
"I Got Cut" opens with the line "All these old men won't die too soon;" and, in a press release, Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan says that the image of "our current president surrounded by a bunch of other ancient white guys, all smiling as they took away access to reproductive health care for women all over the world" inspired the song.
"On the positive side," he continues, "the song is also inspired by shows of unity like the Women's March on Washington in January. It's about freedom of choice. It's about healing psychic and physical wounds and staying free. It's about getting out of the way to make room for people younger and more enlightened than ourselves."
B-side, "Up Against the Wall," was recorded by Tom Robinson in 1978; but, with lyrics like "High wire fencing on the playground" and "Carving up the welfare state," it sounds wholly appropriate for the present-day. Robinson waived his publishing royalties in order to aid the fundraising effort.
Both songs are vintage Superchunk power pop / pop punk and display all of the high-pitched, tension-filled energy that have made them one of America's truly great bands.
Check out both songs. You can order digital versions from the Merge Store and stream them everywhere.
