New Single From Switzerland’s Spencer

"City Lights"

By Henry Lipput

"City Lights" is the second single off of Spencer's 2016 We Built This Mountain Just To See The Sunrise.

The album turned out to be one of my favorites last year and ended up at number five on my year-end list. It's great to see that they're still working the tunes and giving more people a chance to discover the album song-by-song.

In my review, I mentioned that no album I've heard in the last few years rocked as much as this one. There are terrific hooks and guitars a-plenty as well as a real sense of dynamics. And "City Lights" is no exception.

Led by the vocals and guitars of Leo Niessner the band also includes the awesome playing of Pashi on bass, JP Free on drums, and Reto Eggenberger on keyboards.

All of them have a part in the sound of "City Lights" which begins with dance rhythms made up of Pashi's throbbing bass line and Reto's retro-80s keyboards. Starting slow (and referencing the album's title in the lyrics) the song builds to a rocking, catchy chorus with Leo's strong vocals and JP's steady drumbeats throughout. And, in a nice twist, in the break the band quiets down to then build again to repeat the chorus.

What's next for Spencer? I don't know who at Ambulance Recordings gets to decide which songs are singles but if the next one is the pop masterpiece "Harry's Still Sad" they'll have the world-wide hit they deserve.

Spencer's We Built This Mountain Just To See The Sunrise is out now on Ambulance Recordings. The "City Lights" single is available on iTunes.
