No Calm Before the Storm
I say this every year, but December is a wild month here at CDMHQ. We have Hanukkah, CoolDaughter 2's birthday, CoolMom's birthday, and Christmas. Add swim practice, swim meets, coooldaughter doctors' appointments, and the general chaos that's been going on in the house this week; and it's been kind of distracting and overwhelming even before we get into all of the festivities. It's nice to have some shows where we can blow off steam.
That all starts on Thursday night when Dentist head to the boardwalk in Coney Island for a show at Kitchen 21. Hit The Lights take over House of Independents. Hot Tuna play Asbury's Paramount Theatre.
On Friday, it's another good one at Asbury Park Brewery with Maneka, Hellrazor, and Not Yer Baby. Brother Andrew celebrates the season at APYC. Off With Their Heads play Brighton Bar in Long Branch with Jon Caspi, Mobina Galore, True Will, and The Upfux. The Tide Bends head over to Trenton's MillHill Basement for a show with Pretty Goats and Sad Lips. Lost Straitjackets hold their holiday bash at Jersey City's Monty Hall. They did a live Christmas album with Nick Lowe as well as a full album of Nicke Lowe covers, so... ...I'm just guessing here, but there could be guests at this one. Rent Party in Maplewood holds its holiday fundraiser with Rebecca Turner, Cliff Westfall, Fond Farewells, and Girls On Grass. Sharkmuffin play Zone One at Brooklyn's Elsewhere with Fat Heaven and Bizarre Sharks. DJ set there by Jess Dye of High Waisted.
Saturday is a busy night in Hudson County. Overlake, Fruit & Flowers, and Glenn Morrow's Cry For Help play Monty Hall. It's the inaugural Reverend Jim's Music for Kids Benefit at Maxwell's Tavern in Hoboken with The RockNRoll HiFives, Davie & The Trainwreck, and lots more. The Bouncing Souls play a sold-out White Eagle Hall in Jersey City with TSOL and Blanks 77.
There are plenty of non-Hudson County shows on Saturday as well. Lowlight, The Blackfires, Zac Clark, and Rachel Ana Dobken are at Transparent Clinch in the afternoon. APYC hosts a benefit for Puerto Rico featuring gods, DJ Foggy Notion and Puerto Rico's The Kid & The Curse. Jet Weston & His Atomic Ranch hands take the late slot at APYC. The Pop Break hold their second annual "Locals Christmas Party" in Convention Hall's Grand Arcade with Deal Casino, latewaves, GayGuy/StraightGuy, and The Vaughns. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists play a sold-out Music Hall of Williamsburg with Sad13. Reverend Horton Heat takes over the Stone Pony with Junior Brown and The Blasters.
On Sunday, Lost In Society play Asbury Park Brewery with Stay Wild, latewaves, and School Drugs. SLEEPiES, Ex-Girlfriends, Shop Talk, and PANTS are at Brooklyn Bazaar. Wage War and a whole bunch of other bands play Asbury's House of Independents. PJ Rasmussen and his band are at Langosta Lounge. Ted Leo is back at MHOW, this time with Big Huge; and I think there are still tix. China Crisis play The Saint with Composition Of Sound. It's Jody Joseph's 15th annual Christmas concert at The Pony.
