Titus Andronicus Announce 5th Studio LP and "Acoustic" Tour

Patrick Stickles

A Productive Cough

Early this morning, before the bomb cyclone bombed, Titus Andronicus announced that they'd be releasing their fifth studio album (and second for Merge Records), A Productive Cough, on March 2nd. The band also announced that, to support the album, Patrick Stickles and pianist Alex Molini would set out on the first-ever Titus Andronicus "acoustic" tour. This set-up will mirror -- I'm assuming -- what Stickles and Molini did for a few songs during the Titus Andronicus set at Market Hotel back in December; so Stickles will, most likely, be going electric for most of it. The tour kicks off in Kingston, NY and winds up in our neck of the woods with April shows in Philly and Brooklyn.

Titus Andronicus have also provided a taste of the new record in the form of the Ray Concepcion-directed video for the first single, "Number One (In New York)." The song is an eight-plus-minute ballad featuring horns, drums, bells, strings, and backing vocals in addition to the guitar and piano. The song isn't stylistically unprecedented in the Titus Andronicus catalog by any stretch, but a whole album of ballads would present a significant departure. A Productive Cough comes in at a relatively short-looking seven tracks, which is another shift when compared to the 29-song punk rock opera that was The Most Lamentable Tragedy.

For your convenience, here are both the video and all of the announced tour dates so far.
