Lowlight play some area shows with Pretenders this weekend. |
Opening Day
I look forward to Opening Day all year. I'm not a huge sports fan. I probably couldn't name 10 NBA or NHL teams. The NFL is just too gross for me. College? Too many teams to keep track of. But I love baseball.
My family are Mets fans, but I am Yankee pinstripes through and through. I still have a soft spot for the Amazins, though. We went to our share of Mets' Opening Days at Shea. The most memorable for me was probably Tom Seaver's return to the Mets on April 5th, 1983.
Now, the Yanks are loaded. Boston is formidable. It's going to be a spring and summer of ups, downs, stress, and near coronaries as the Yankee / Red Sox rivalry heats up the way it's supposed to.
Anyway. Shows...
Things start up on Thursday with Deaf Poets, Black Zeppelin, and Frenular Delta at the brewery. Joy Cleaner, Algebra II, David Brown, and Young Legs are at In The West in New Brunswick. It's Mint 400 Night at Montclair's Meatlocker with Sink Tapes, Yawn Mower, The Components, and Shithead's Rainbow. Tommy Stinson brings his Cowboys in the Campfire to Monty Hall in Jersey City. River Rats, RRRash, Sick, and Rust N Stardust are at The Saint.
On Friday, Trace Mountains celebrate their record release at Alphaville in Brooklyn with Operator Music Band, and Spirit Was. Sugar Trip, Birds Of Prey, Society Hill, and Nicole Govel are at Brighton Bar in Long Branch. School Drugs head up to Brooklyn Bazaar for a big one with Dag Nasty and GIVE. Millhill Basement in Trenton hosts a record release party for Doc Rotten with The Cryptkeeper Five, Buncha Jerks, and Houston and The Dirty Rats. The Munsens have a homecoming show at The Saint with Sun Voyager, Gristmill, and Have A Good Season. Monster Magnet play Starland with Painted Doll, Rahway, Sekond Skyn, Bound Alive, and The Walk Arounds. And the Pretenders tour with our best buds, Lowlight, rolls into Red Bank's Count Basie Theatre.
Bond St. Basement has Ribeye Brothers, Painted Doll, Sweet Joey's Thing Of Beauty, and Happy Chichester on Saturday. Jackson Pines play APYC. Dag Nasty, The Fire Still Burns, and The Scandals play a sold-out Crossroads in Garwood. Black Flamingos are in NYC at Otto's Shrunken Head with Mummula. Darkwing, Grem Smiley, Cold Beaches, and Grace Vonderkuhn play Our Wicked Lady in Brooklyn. At Sunnyvale, it's Laura Stevenson, Zula, and Fern Mayo. Lowlight play an afternoon show at the Transparent Clinch gallery with Earnhardt and Matty Carlock before heading to Upper Darby, PA for another night with Pretenders at Tower Theater. The Battery Electric head to Philly for a show at The TUSK with Starskream and Surrender Dorothy. Wonder Bar plays host to the "Makin Waves" 30th anniversary bash from 2pm to 2am.
Sunday is Easter, but there are a few things going on. Sorority Noise come to House of Independents for a sold-out show with Remo Drive and Jelani Sei. Nobunny brings the madness to Diveria Drive in Brooklyn with Chorizo and Cheap Sneakers.
Have fun. Happy Easter. Go Yanks! Don't drink and drive.
