Contact Numbers for New Jersey's Congressional Delegation and Other Links

Some Information

This site is about music. And, even when it comes to music, there really aren't all that many people who care what I think. But, in the face of what's been going on in our country, I couldn't just sit here and continue to tell you about albums and EPs or show you pictures from shows I've attended as if nothing else in the world is happening. Personally, I feel disgusted, saddened, and helpless about what I'm seeing and reading in the news. I decided that, for whatever little it's worth, I needed to use this space to do something, even if it's as small as just providing some information.

No matter what side of the political divide you're on, look inside yourself and ask whether or not it's right to use threats to the well-being of children and families as a legislative negotiating tactic or as some kind of "deterrent" to immigration or asylum-seeking. Once you've done that, if you feel like you'd like to make your voice heard on the subject, there are things you can do.

Here is the contact information for all of the members of the New Jersey congressional delegation. If you're not from New Jersey, you can find information on your own legislators at house.gov and senate.gov.

Also, here is a very short list of some organizations that could use your help right now. There are many more than just these, so do some reading and find out which ones are doing work that you find important and in line with your own values.

Just a Few Organizations. There are many more.

KIND -- "KIND will achieve our vision by: Ensuring that no child appears in immigration court without high quality legal representation; Advancing laws, policies, and practices that ensure children's protection and uphold their right to due process and fundamental fairness; and Promoting in countries of origin, transit, and destination durable solutions to child migration that are grounded in the best interests of the child and ensure that no child is forced to involuntarily migrate."

ProBar -- "Founded in 2003 with just one staff-person, ProBAR's Children's Project now has a team of more than ten attorneys, two Board of Immigration Appeals accredited representatives, twenty paralegals, and two full-time volunteers. The Children's Project currently serves more than 1,000 detained, unaccompanied children at shelters in South Texas by providing them with "Know Your Rights" presentations and coordinating their legal representation."

RAICES -- "The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees in Central and South Texas. RAICES is the largest immigration non-profit in Texas with offices in Austin, Corpus, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio."

Texas Civil Rights Project -- "The Texas Civil Rights Project uses legal advocacy to empower Texas communities and create policy change."

Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project -- "The Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP) works to prevent wrongful deportations by connecting refugee families to community support and emergency legal aid. "

And there's always the ACLU and ActBlue.

Here's some music from Superchunk who play White Eagle Hall in Jersey City tomorrow.
