Premiere: New Single from Trying. LP Out 7/27.

Trying by Sam Harris

"The Grill"

We've posted here about Columbus, Ohio's Trying a few times before. Since we premiered the band's "21" last year, founder and songwriter, Cameron Carr, has left home for the big city, returned, left again, and returned once more. That movement and uncertainty both delayed and inspired Trying's upcoming, debut LP, Leave and Never Come Back. Trying will release Leave and Never Come Back on July 27th; and, today, we have the first single.

"The Grill" continues Trying's exploration of deeply personal, mostly acoustic but with some noisy flourishes, twee pop. Of the song, Carr says, "There’s a line in 'The Grill' -- 'well, I tried to make things better but I just wasn’t happy while I was there,' -- that comes back later in the album on "Nobody Loves Halloween Like You Do." On "Nobody Loves Halloween," it's about personal justification -- a sort of 'I had to do this.' But, on "The Grill," it's coming from someone else. I was thinking about how we can be so angry or upset sometimes that we can't understand other people's situations or perspectives; but, when we find ourselves suddenly saying the same things and making our own uncertain choices, it can force us to reevaluate. 'The Grill' is about the house I grew up in and how all of us who lived there have moved away from it differently. Maybe more generally about how as distance grows between ourselves and the people we love. We don't always understand why they make the choices they do."

Begun as a solo project, Trying now consists of Carr (vocals, guitar, bass), Kelsey Yappel (violin, vocals, glockenspiel), Brady Costigan (guitar, bass), and Zayn Dweik (drums).

Stream "The Grill" below. Leave and Never Come Back will be out on 7/27 on CD, tape, and online. You can pre-order it over at Trying's Bandcamp page.
