Exclusive Premiere: New Single from Flammable Animals

"Ordinary Threat"

Asbury Park foursome, Flammable Animals, released their debut EP just about a year ago. Since then, Guy Battaglia (guitar / vocals), Kevin Houston (guitar / vocals), Pat "PNapz" Napurano (bass), and Joseph Enright (drums) have gigged non-stop, showing up pretty regularly here in our weekly listings.

At the end of this month, the band will release their sophomore EP, All These Wolves; and, today, they give us the first single. "Ordinary Threat" combines the sounds pop punk and alt rock into something that's both loud and accessible.

All These Wolves is due on Friday, March 25th; and Flammable Animals are set to celebrate with a release show at Asbury Park Yacht Club on March 26th. That show is free and also features The Bunks and Brian Perrino.

Exclusive Premiere: Bergenfield's The Bunks' First Single from Their Debut EP

"Here Comes the Storm"

It's rock and roll premiere day here at CoolDad Music. Northern New Jersey blues rock power trio, The Bunks, will be releasing their debut EP for download this Friday, February 19th. Today they share the title track from Here Comes the Storm.

"Here Comes the Storm" is a dose of heavy blues that owes quite a bit to the sounds of Jack White or The Black Keys. The trio of Jozcel (guitar / vocals), Jon (bass / vocals), and Jonzi (drums) also channel some earlier practitioners like Led Zeppelin while keeping things squarely in the here and now.

The band will be celebrating the release of Here Comes the Storm this Sunday, February 21st, at Mexicali Live in Teaneck with help from The Vaughns, Flammable Animals, and Jimmy Meier. Doors for that one are at 6pm, and you'll be able to grab a free copy of the EP at the show.

"Modern Girls"

As promised, our brothers in denim are back with another track from their upcoming Lose Control EP. For "Modern Girls," The Battery Electric go a little poppier with a singalong chorus and plenty of whoah-ohs. There's still plenty to rock along with, though, and I can see "Modern Girls" becoming a Battery Electric live set favorite.

"Holiday in Heaven"

It's been almost a year since the release of The Battery Electric's The Heart and The Thrill. Today, the Asbury Park band share their new single, "Holiday in Heaven," by way of a photo video. The song is the first taste of the band's upcoming Lose Control EP, recorded with Paul Ritchie. It's also the first video in a planned series that will see the band doing something similar for each song on the EP until we get the whole thing.

This oughta be fun. I'm sitting here watching "Holiday in Heaven" and remembering some pretty crazy shows with the Battery boys, like their wild and snowy LP release show last year at Asbury Lanes. Have fun picking yourself out. I know I did.

As for the song, it is a rocker in the grand tradition of what we've come to expect from The Battery Electric featuring a particularly soulful performance from frontman Ron Santee and some major shredding from guitarist Brent Bergholm.

Premiere: New Single from All Sensory Void

"Romantically Hopeless"

All Sensory Void has, up to this point, been Eric Goldberg. The project has been as eclectic as it has been prolific. Through four albums in the last two years, All Sensory Void has covered psychedelic guitar pop and dreamy shoegaze. As the band prepare the next release, Chasing Transcendence (February 2016), they've expanded to a trio. Brian DePhillis (drums / samples) and Danny Goldberg (bass / vocals) have joined Eric to round things out. Today, they're giving us the first glimpse of what to expect from All Sensory Void's first full-band effort in the form of "Romantically Hopeless."

"Romantically Hopeless" is another foray into the world of dream pop for All Sensory Void. Throughout the verse, the chiming guitar and driving rhythm section recall something like The Cure or some of their more recent acolytes. Eric Goldberg sings of his romantic hopelessness -- "Yea, I know how to want you but not how to say I want you to stay" -- as the song goes into its final explosive chorus, adding some jagged edges to the shimmering guitars. The song rides a roughly three-minute instrumental outro that highlights the new, full-band approach.

Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Skylar Adler, "Romantically Hopeless" is a pretty exciting preview of where All Sensory Void are headed. Check out the song below, and stay tuned for news on Chasing Transcendence.

Exclusive Premiere: Saturday Drive, Gloria Drive EP

EP Premiere

Bergen County trio Saturday Drive have been making music together for a while now. Kindergarten friends Alex Bradshaw (guitar / vocals) and Sean Mcilraith (bass / backing vocals) have been at it since 2004. They added drummer Brandon Neuburger in 2005 and haven't looked back. From the beginning, Saturday Drive's goal has been to make "the type of songs they would like to hear on the radio."

Today, the band are sharing their latest EP Gloria Drive right here. The four-song set displays influences of power pop, pop punk, and straight-up rock that combine in an accessible sound that kind of harkens back to the rock radio days of my youth.

I'm thinking there's a theme here with song titles like "I Don't Love Her Anymore," "Leave Me Alone," "Waste of Time," and "Dumb for You." Over the course of those four tracks, Saturday Drive cover a lot of ground from the pop punk of "I Don't Love Her Anymore" to the almost folksy "Leave Me Alone" to the power pop of "Waste of Time" and "Dumb for You."

Recorded by Adrian Melendez and Brian Chirlo at NJ's Mofat Studio, Gloria Drive has the polished and sometimes anthemic sound of lots of the music I remember from the days when rock music was actually played on the radio.

Exclusive Premiere: Rick Barry / Andy Bova SIMGE 24-Hour Songwriting Challenge Contribution

"All Is Well"

For the second straight year, our extended family over at Speak Into My Good Eye held a 24-Hour Songwriting Challenge in which they invited artists to write, record, and submit a new, original song all in the space of a single 24-hour period. Last year's event focused on New Jersey. This year, SIMGE opened things up to New York and Pennsylvania (and beyond) as well.

Things kicked off this past September 11th with a show at Wonder Bar. At the stroke of midnight on September 12th, the clock started. By the time it was all over, SIMGE received nearly 40 submissions. Proceeds from the resulting compilation will benefit the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

SIMGE will be officially releasing the 2015 compilation at their CMJ Showcase. That show takes place on October 15th at Littlefield in Brooklyn and features Mount Sharp, A Deer A Horse, Vivid Dreams, Deal Casino, and Julian Fulton.

You don't have to wait until October 15th to hear a track, though. We've got the premiere of "All Is Well," the contribution from Rick Barry and Andy Bova, right here. The pair have worked together before, both as members of No Wine For Kittens and on some of Barry's solo work.

"All Is Well" is spare and beautiful, featuring, simply, Barry's trademark low-key vocals accompanied by acoustic guitar. As I listen, I get the sense that the title phrase is more of a half-hearted reassurance than a forceful declaration.

Premiere: First Single from Black Flamingos' Self-titled EP

"Okinawa"

Quite simply, I love local surf rock trio Black Flamingos. Robbie Butkowski (guitar), Declan O'Connell (bass), and Vincent Minervino (drums) all have other projects; but they definitely make some magic when they come together as Black Flamingos. The power trio setup gives Butkowski a chance to open up and go wild on guitar, and all the reverb and twang gets me... right here... you know?

Anyway, I'm thrilled that the guys are allowing me to give you the first taste of their upcoming, self-titled EP. The record is due from Little Dickman on October 16th, but you can take a listen to single "Okinawa" right now. The song is a careening tribute to traditional surf instrumentals with Black Flamingos' signature edge and just a hint of darkness.

Black Flamingos was engineered and mixed at Coffe Haus Studios in Freehold, NJ and features some amazing artwork by Sol Rac.

You've got two chances to catch Black Flamingos live this weekend as they play Friday at The Claddagh in Highlands and head to Roxy & Duke's in Dunellen for the Rockabilly Rally on Saturday afternoon.

"Don't Be a Dick" / "Growing to Stand the Sight of You"

Your childhood friendships are important. They shape who you are and keep you grounded to your true self, no matter where life takes you. If you're lucky, you can maintain a few of those friendships for your whole life. I know that my oldest friends are extremely important to me.

Zac Silva of The Shady Street Show Band and Mat Kiley of Hot Blood have known each other since they were yay high to a grasshopper. Their own musical projects have gone in wildly different directions. Shady Street produce a soulful and melodic mix that relies on intricate arrangements, horns, and Ryan Gregg's impassioned vocal delivery. Hot Blood are a hardcore punk band through and through -- short sharp shocks of songs punctuated with angular guitars and from the gut vocals.

Despite the divergent directions of their musical endeavors, though, The Shady Street Show band and Hot Blood have a deep appreciation for each other; and they decided it would be fun to release a split on which they traded songs. Shady Street put their spin on some Hot Blood, while Hot Blood give Shady Street the hardcore treatment.

The bands will unleash Shady Blood on the world with a show at The Saint in Asbury Park on September 19th. Just to keep with the eclectic theme of the split, joining them on the bill will be country outlaws, Lowlight, and experimental psychedelic / electronic duo, Bone & Marrow.

Ah... But you needn't wait a whole month to hear the product of this collaboration. We've got the first two singles for you right here, right now.

First up, The Shady Street Show Band cover No Kings track and Hot Blood live show stopper, "Don't Be a Dick." Shady Street's arrangement adds almost a full minute and a half of sweet, soulful goodness to the track; and you can almost see Woody screaming "You're a f*#cking dick!" into Buzz Lightyear's face.



Next, Hot Blood give us their take on the already dark and foreboding "Growing to Stand the Sight of You" from The Shady Street Show Band's self-titled EP. Hot Blood's version of red hot anger and rage, though different from the seething slow burn of Shady Street, works really well on this one.

Exclusive Premiere: New Video from Bobby Mahoney and The Seventh Son

"Don't Ever Love Me"

East Brunswick's Bobby Mahoney and The Seventh Son are set to release their second full-length studio album, the Max Aharon-produced The Outskirts, on July 18th. Today, the Central Jersey five-piece bring us the Zack Morrison-directed clip for the album's second single, "Don't Ever Love Me."

The song is a hard-rocking affair that brims with the emotion and romance of many of Mahoney's New Jersey influences like Brian Fallon and Bruce Springsteen. It's that not too unfamiliar story of someone afraid to commit to a relationship. Morrison uses light -- the bright sun of a field, the dappled sunlight of a wooded area, the darkness inside a car -- to effectively set the mood throughout the clip.

"Summer"

Now how appropriate is this? Here we are. Memorial Day Weekend. It's the unofficial start of summer, and Monroe, NJ's The Color Atlantic hit us with the first single from their upcoming, self-titled EP. It's called "Summer."

"It's summertime, and I'm in love again," sings Bryan Haring over some upbeat, alt-rock guitar chords. Throughout the song, The Color Atlantic equate that feeling of new love with the feeling of summer. "It won't be summer until she's mine." Things won't warm up until she warms up to him, I guess.

The band release their EP this Saturday, 5/23, with a show at The Saint that also features Thee Idea Men, The Machines, The Bunks, and an acoustic set from Garden State Line. Doors for that one are at 7:30pm, and $10 gets you inside.

Exclusive Premiere: First Single from The Planes' Upcoming EP

"Evacuation Route"

I first met Stephen Perry at a showcase he was putting on at last year's Northside Festival in Brooklyn. The bill included bands like Clouder, The Meaning of Life, Haybaby, Old Monk, Miniboone, and Stephen's own band -- a quartet with PJ Levine, Jeff Patlingrao, and Brian LaRue -- The Planes. After their set, Stephen gave me a card and a T-shirt.

The Planes had impressed me with their unadorned indie pop -- just Fender guitars, Fender amps, a simple approach to songs, and some appropriately slacker-y playing. When I got home, I went to the link on Stephen's card at heartsbleedradio.com and found that we were of a similar mind when it came to the sounds we liked and our desire to let the world hear some of the lesser-known bands making them.

In that spirit, here is the first single from The Planes' upcoming EP Evacuation Kit. "Evacuation Route" captures all of those things I enjoy about classic indie pop. The song is almost exactly 3 minutes. You can hear the single-coil jangle, the reverb. It's endearingly easy-going. The whole thing reminds me a bit of some of the lighter fare from Soft Bulletin-era Flaming Lips -- "Buggin'" maybe.

That sensibility permeates the entire Evacuation Kit EP which is out on May 21st. The Planes will be celebrating the release with a show at Brooklyn's Shea Stadium that also features The Jeanies, Shivery Shakes, and Big Huge. That show will also serve as the kickoff for The Planes' tour of the Northeast.

Exclusive Premiere: First Single from Fleeting's Upcoming EP

"Time Killers"

Frank DeFranco is a busy guy. Frank has a day job. He's a member of the trio that co-founded / runs NJ record label Sniffling Indie Kids. And he's in three different bands -- three different bands that I know about, anyway: NGHTCRWLRS, Holy City Zoo, and Fleeting.

It's Fleeting that we're here to talk about today. Frank plays bass for the NJ three-piece. The band also feature Liz Fackelman on vocals, keys, and trombone and Joe Scala on drums and vocals. They bring a big piano pop sound to the table; and you can hear it on "Time Killers," the first single from their upcoming EP, Are We There Yet?

The song is both epic and intimate, the piano building from quiet and jazzy to crashing along with the drums, horn, and shouted vocals. Fackelman declares her independence on lines like, "I've been patiently waiting for you to come and go / When all I'll ever need / Is staring right back at me;" and the song has that particularly personal feel that you really only get when someone is singing along with a piano.

Video Premiere: Dentist, "Over and Over"

Here Comes the Sun

Emily Bornemann had a vision. Her vision involved waves, sunshine, and sea creatures frolicking happily. We came together on a Sunday at CoolDad Music HQ and tried to bring that vision to life. Emily and Jillian Housman created the scene and the creatures and a submarine. I set up my camera and sound recorder. Justin Bornemann dialed his Gretsch in just right.

The result is this live performance of Dentist's new song, "Over and Over." Justin and Emily recreate the vibe here that impressed us all when they performed as a duo, opening for Television, back in December. That, though, was a chilly night on the next to last day of the year. Here, the pair come to us almost as if they're helping to usher in the warm days of a nascent summer.

Exclusive Premiere: New Single from The Clydes

"Hiding from the Summer"

On 2013's Generator, New Brunswick's The Clydes staked themselves out a spot in the power pop / alt rock space. Standouts from that EP like "The Fate of California" and "Marigold" got some airplay around here and highlighted the band's facility with the well-produced, driving, 3 to 4 minute pop song.

On the second single and title track from the band's upcoming debut LP, Hiding from the Summer, The Clydes take things in a slightly more swirling, melodic, and introspective direction. The centerpiece of the track is Brian Johnson's repeated guitar riff. Brent Johnson's vocals are once again right up front. Add in keyboards, some wah, and lyrics like, "If summer's here, I'm not really feeling it;" and you've got something a little more weighty and serious for the band this time around.

Just as impeccably produced as the Clydes' last effort, "Hiding from the Summer" shows a different side of the band while maintaining everything that made Generator work.

Hiding from the Summer is out on May 22nd. The Clydes will celebrate with a release show that same evening at Rahway's Rail House with help from The Paper Jets, The Hostage Crisis, and Twins.

Exclusive Premiere: New Single from Corrina, Corrina

"Pratfall"

And our week of premieres continues here at CoolDad Music.

Today, we've got the latest effort from Red Bank pop punks Corrina, Corrina. The boys are almost done with this year at college. Somewhere between keeping up with their studies and playing the occasional show, they found time to head into Pete Steinkopf's Little Eden Studios to record two new tracks. You'll have to wait until early summer to get your hands on the two-song flexi disc from Little Dickman Records, but you can hear "Pratfall" right here, right now.

Just like pretty much their entire year-old debut LP, American Short Stories, "Pratfall" shows Corrina, Corrina to be a band with an ear for what makes a great punk / alt rock song. They're a band that worships at the feet of The Replacements, The Bouncing Souls, The Menzingers, and The Gaslight Anthem; and you can hear all of those influences coming through on "Pratfall." The track is a two-and-a-half minute mix of emotion, aggression, and accessibility that comes together in a way that's kind of just right.

I continue to be impressed that a band with 3 of its 4 members still in their teens can churn out songs with such polish. That's almost unfair to Corrina, Corrina, though. I'd be impressed with this stuff no matter how old they were.

First Single (Free Download) from Grey Goes Black's Upcoming War of Currents

"We Own the Night"

New Jersey trio Grey Goes Black will be releasing their first full-band recording, War of Currents, this Saturday, April 18th, Record Store Day. In anticipation of the release, the band -- Matt Casoni (vocals, guitar), James Malizia, Jr. (bass, keys), and Steven Moraghan (drums, electronics) -- are sharing the EP's first single right here.

"We Own the Night" is an anthemic, dark wave-inspired track, Casoni's vocals swirling and swan diving around his guitar work and an urgent rhythm section. Casey Schuber contributes piano and some haunting backing vocals. The song would make for a wonderful soundtrack to a solitary, late-night drive along the shore, windows wide open and the wind whipping at your face.

Recorded by Chris Pierce at New Brunswick's Volume 4 and mastered at Timber Studios by Adam Cichocki, War of Currents will be coming to us via New Brunswick's On Fire Records.

Exclusive Premiere: New Single from dollys

"How Charming"

Pop music isn't easy. Think about it. It has some significant constraints. You're trying to create something memorable and catchy that says what you want it to say in the span of about two to four minutes. Lots and lots of my favorite songs and my favorite bands don't do this at all. Built To Spill, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, even Dinosaur Jr. can get pretty jammy and long-winded at times. I love lots of those.

But there's something about a tightly constructed pop song that always blows me away. Think about Brian Wilson, Lennon and McCartney, Morrissey and Marr, Elvis Costello, Belle and Sebastian, that great debut album from Hospitality, last year's great record from Alvvays. I'm always amazed at the joy and happiness that can come from the discipline of great pop music.

Back in September, I had the privilege of heading into Lakehouse Recording Studios on a Sunday night to hear dollys' forthcoming Oh, Please. The band handed out little comment cards, and we were supposed to give the songs a number rating (1-10) and write down any impressions we had as the tracks played. I remember writing lots of high numbers and scribbling notes like "Beach Boys" and "The Smiths" in the margins.

The Oh, Please recording process was long as dollys recorded everything live to analog tape. The physical production process has been even longer, and we're still waiting for Oh, Please to be unleashed on the world. Trust me. The wait will be worth it.

But... But...

dollys would like to give you something for being so patient. Today, you can stream two non-album tracks that make up the single "How Charming." Like Oh, Please, the band recorded these songs at Lakehouse live to tape. Both have been staples of dollys' live shows for a while.

Drummer / vocalist Natalie Newbold takes lead vocals on both songs. The title track starts out kind of bouncy and dreamy, but rocks quite a bit around the chorus. There's a great guitar solo from Jeff Lane as the song nears its end.

"Cornerstones" does a nice version of the loud-quiet-loud thing, opening with a noisy intro before Newbold is back singing over some quiet guitar, muted drums, and some subtle bass from Erik Kase Romero (who also engineered / mixed the tracks along with Tim Pannella). The chorus, "Hating yourself is never time well spent. This low year has given me hell...," is a mini production number every time it comes around.

dollys know how to do pop in a way that's a lot like some of the names I listed up there at the beginning. There's an attention to detail that's obvious in what they do -- from the songcraft all the way to the production and engineering. Check out both tracks right here.

dollys will be holding a release show for "How Charming" this Saturday, April 18th, at New Brunswick's Glitterbox with Perennial Reel, Howlish, and Specimen 47. That's also the day you'll be able to download "How Charming" from dollys' Bandcamp page for free.

Video Premeire: Semiotics, "M. Connolly"

Live at The Banana Stand

Semiotics are kind of at the center of the new New Brunswick DIY basement scene. As proprietors? residents? of The Banana Stand, they support local and touring bands by holding shows in their basement on a regular basis. They're also out there playing almost every weekend, and it's possible to catch them doing everything from full band sets to stripped down acoustic sets when there's no power and the toilets at the venue aren't working. They also really like hats.

They'll soon be putting out a live EP recorded at their home base called, appropriately, Live at The Banana Stand. Today Semiotics premiere a video for one of the tracks. "M. Connolly" features guitarists Nick Rapon and Seth Bliss in their basement delivering their brand of emotional and literate pop punk accompanied only by their acoustic guitars.

Song Premiere: NGHTCRWLRS, "You're Living the Life"

Self-titled Debut Out 2/28

New Jersey quartet NGHTCRWLRS are set to release their self-titled debut LP this Saturday, February 28th via Sniffling Indie Kids. The members of NGHTCRWLRS have histories with several active and inactive New Jersey bands like Holy City Zoo, All Sensory Void, Lake Effect, and The Nico Blues. Together Frank DeFranco, Eric Goldberg, Max Rauch, and Brian Goglia produce a sound that's somewhere between classic guitar-based indie rock and post-hardcore emo. It's a combination that's evident on the latest single from NGHTCRWLRS, "You're Living the Life."

The two-movement single starts out almost jangly, slows down as it meanders through the psychedelic bridge, and then transitions to something louder and more explosive. It does all of this in just over three minutes.

NGHTCRWLRS will be celebrating their album release on February 28th at Jersey City's The Dopeness along with a completely loaded bill featuring Cicada Radio, France, and Dentist. Check out "You're Living the Life" below and head up to JC this weekend for the show.
