The Battery Electric Played The Stone Pony's 44th Anniversary Weekend w/ The Vansaders, Lowlight, Little Vicious, Strange Eclipse, 2/17/18

The Battery Electric

Cursed

The Battery Electric might be cursed. Guitarist Brent Bergholm even took a moment to thank whomever it was that doomed the band to play every one of their Asbury Park shows during a snowstorm. This past Saturday night resembled the band's The Heart and The Thrill release show as well as the show they played at House of Independents to close out 2017 with snow blanketing the streets as the night progressed.

The weather didn't seem to dampen the turnout too much, though; and those who did brave the elements got to hear five of New Jersey's finest rock n roll bands on a night set aside to celebrate the iconic New Jersey venue's 44th birthday. Asbury's own Little Vicious, Lowlight, and The Vansaders, along with young Roxbury garage / blues rockers, Strange Eclipse, got everyone nice and toasty warm for The Battery Electric.

Little Vicious have gone from a rough-edged, bluesy stoner two-piece to a rough-edged bluesy stoner three-piece fronted by the personality that is Marguerite King. Strange Eclipse are young worshippers of blues rock from the likes of Led Zeppelin or The White Stripes and put on a show that makes it seem like they've been at this for much longer than they have. Lowlight deliver their synth-soaked "roadhouse chic" with an honesty and conviction that never diminishes no matter how many times I hear them play their songs. The Vansaders' live performance is a physical punch in the gut with huge guitars and mammoth drums anchoring the songs of Doug Zambon and crew.

The Battery Electric's set was, quite literally, a whiskey-soaked affair at times. The band played songs from their first LP all the way up through those they just completed recording with Jesse Hughes in Joshua Tree, CA as frontman Ron Santee doused people up front from a bottle of Seagram's. The crowd ate up all of The Battery Electric's rockstar energy, singing along and losing it to Bergholm's guitar solos. Several times, Santee dedicated songs to specific fans in the crowd; and the whole evening took on the feel of a big party among friends.

The Battery Electric

By the time we got outside, the snow had stopped and already started to melt. It's hard to tell if The Battery Electric are done with their curse. Maybe they could test it by -- and this is just an idea -- playing a show in the spring or summer and seeing what happens then.

Matt Chrystal's Show of 2017: Birdcloud / Ex-Girlfriends / Little Vicious at The Saint, 7/3/17

Birdcloud

3rd of July, Asbury Park

By Matt Chrystal

Hey, remember the time Birdcloud came to town? If you were there, then it's probably something you will never forget... or at least something that you can never unsee. Summer is all but a distant memory now, but the visions of Birdcloud still fill my head like the plumes of blue smoke that filled the Saint on that sweaty July evening.

Here we are at the end of the year, and I'm feeling nostalgic for all those good times had throughout this crazy year. "Best Of" lists are coming out fast and furious; and, for me, the good times don't get any better than Birdloud bringing their own unique brand of country, rock, and twisted humor to the good ole Garden State. It was The Show of the Year, in my humble opinion.

Picture it. Asbury Park. July 3rd. 2017.

It was a 90 degree day, and the night was about to get even hotter inside The Saint. Little Dickman Records had been celebrating their five year anniversary in style by putting on a terrific series of summer shows and had booked one hell of a pre-Independence Day party that would rock the city by the seashore like a tidal wave. The evening saw the successful pairing of the Nashville based, indie-rock powerhouse duo of Birdcloud with Brooklyn punks, Ex-Girlfriends. Asbury Park's Little Vicious were also along for the raucous ride.

It was a "holiday weekend," but it was still a Monday night. It could have gone either way. People could come ready to party or it could be one of those off nights in between the weekend and the actual holiday. Luckily, it was the former. Little Dickman Records went above and beyond to promote this show as a "must-see" night of rock n roll. And, hot damn, were they right on about this one.

The whole night had a big feel about it. Little Vicious, a two piece rock band and recent transplant to Asbury Park by way of Fort Collins, CO, kicked things off with an epic set filled with post-punk swagger that felt like they were taking on a stadium instead of a Jersey shore nightclub. Ex-girlfriends put on a fun, loose, energetic set and were joined on stage by their former tourmates, Jasmin Kaset and Makenzie Green of Birdcloud for a few spirited numbers. The party vibes were in full swing.

Then came time for Birdcloud.

I have been to a lot of shows this year. I seen some stuff.
But this… this was different.

They were fun. They were funny. They were provocative. They were ridiculous. They were self-deprecating. They were self-indulgent. They were genius. They were empowering. They were uber-talented. They were mesmerizing. They were intimidating. They were comedy. They were performance art. They were rock n roll. They were everything.

And they were wearing adult diapers.

And they did not give a fuck.

They fed off the energy from the crowd; but they were putting on an unapologetic, mind-melting assault on the senses and having a damn good time doing it. And if you were enjoying it, too… well then good for you.

I was enjoying every crazy second of it.

There were larger than life cardboard cut outs of the band in the background, smoke machines that would fill the room, pauses for shots, beers, and reapplications of lipstick. There were jokes, stories, and -- of course -- songs that could make a truck-driver blush and send any conservatives heading for the door. There was mandolin madness, gooey guitar goodness, and a harmonica solo that was simply unforgettable.

Mackenzie wore a bedazzled neck brace, and I am still not sure whether she actually needed or if it was just a prop used to punctuate some of her punchlines. All I do know is that Birdcloud had the crowd eating out of their hands throughout the entire set. There were moments of pure joy, frenzy, and of shock and awe peppered in.

There is an amazing chemistry between Kaset and Green that is undeniable and a magnetism about them that is undisputable. I had become so engrossed with the performance that, for that brief moment when Mak tore off her neckbrace, finished her beer, and bowed before the audience in one fluid, grandiose gesture, I can only assume that it must have been akin to what the disciples felt when they witnessed Jesus walk on water.

It was a gosh darn miracle!

Birdcloud

Birdcloud was the perfect combination of calculated trainwreck and well-oiled machine.
A little bit country. A little bit rock n roll. A whole lotta fucking fun!

Thank you Birdcloud.

Y’all come back soon now, ya hear.

Thursday thru Saturday with Dentist, The Battery Electric, Strange Eclipse, Kerbivore, Holiday, Lyons, Lowlight, Little Vicious, and The Jolly Daggers

Little Vicious at Bond St. Basement

Weekend Off

I don't know what happened on Friday. Several albums came out that I do want to talk about, but I just never got myself going. One cup of coffee doesn't do it for me. If I don't have that second cup, I'm useless for the rest of the day. Also, I'd done a photoshoot with Dentist the day before; and, I think, just wandering around in the searing heat all day did a number on me.

At any rate, even if I wasn't posting, it's not like I took the weekend off.

There was the aforementioned photoshoot with Dentist. I don't really have a lot of confidence with band promo shoots. The spur-of-the-moment, reactionary nature of live music photography seems to be more of a strength for me; but I'm pretty proud of the shots we got. I think I'm starting to learn how to photograph groups and -- come on -- Dentist are just a good-looking band.

Summer -- at least the month of July -- is about swim teams here at CDMHQ; and the cooldaughters had a summer camp swim meet scheduled for Thursday night. When that got washed out, CoolMom and I headed down to Porta Asbury Park to catch Dentist's evening set. This was my second time seeing them as a 3-piece, and it's really working for them.

Then Friday. Daytime: blah. Dinner time: CoolMom killed it with a nice dinner of homemade chicken parm. That evening, I stopped in at Asbury Park Music Foundation to see -- for the first time in a while -- our denim-clad brothers in The Battery Electric. They were playing the release show for Roxbury, NJ's Strange Eclipse, and the alcohol-free set still got pretty wild with the young headliners hopping up to sing "Does He Love You" with the Battery boys.

For their part, Strange Eclipse, who look to be just a little older than CoolDaughter #1, were impressive. They turned in an extremely tight set of heavy blues / garage rock that had me forgetting they were teenagers. I headed home straight after, since the cooldaughters had a two-day swim meet with their club team starting the next day.

I thought I'd get some posts done during the excruciating boredom that is being a spectator at a big, club swim meet. But things were so mind-numbingly boring that I could barely move my fingers. Also, I may only have had one cup of coffee on Saturday.

Then, it was back from Princeton for a busy Saturday night. The Asbury Park Brewery was hosting an early show that featured Staten Island's Kerbivore, Neptune's Holiday, and local Asbury favorites, Lyons. Kerbivore came highly-recommended from our good buddy Sugarblast Al C of the Signal2Noise radio program, and their power-punk-pop (think GBV, Replacements, etc.) didn't disappoint. Holiday are a low-key trio that make some big sounds which always remind me of Neil Young or Built To Spill. And Lyons closed things out with their chimey post-punk.

I'm quickly warming to the brewery's tasting room as a venue. It's a little loud and echo-y, but it's nice to have another independent spot where you can see bands and enjoy some nice, local beers.

Quick hustle over to Bond St. Basement for Lowlight, Little Vicious, and The Jolly Daggers. It was a beautiful summer Saturday in Asbury, so that meant parking super far away and people watching as I walked to Bond. I started wondering where they keep the machine that spits out all these Jersey Shore cast-member clones that wander downtown Asbury in the summer.

Anyway...

The Bond St. show was a late one with Lowlight kicking things off at around 10:45. They were great as usual, and we even got a few moments of Renee without her hat. Little Vicious had people dancing and going apeshit with help from a guy named Dan who wailed on a block for just about the entire set. The Jolly Daggers hit at about 1:10 in total darkness, and were fun as always. I mean, they are led by Captain Fun, Ron Santee; and, on this night, they also featured a wig-clad Marguerite King of Little Vicious on lead guitar. I was toast afterwards and headed home.

Back to Princeton Sunday morning for about 6 more hours of sitting around at the meet where, again, I got no blogging and very little editing done. I did have time to reflect, though, on what a cool few days I'd just had. CoolMom and I got a little pizza date on Thursday. I got to hang with some of my very best friends and see them play. I saw and got to know a a couple of new bands. I took a whole bunch of what I consider to be pretty cool pictures. The five or so minutes that the cooldaughters were actually in the water were exciting as always.

I really need to stop complaining so much.

Pics from this weekend are pretty much all edited and will be appearing in the Flickr galleries and / or on the Facebook page if they haven't already.
