New Single from Real Estate. Atlas Out March 4th.

"Talking Backwards"

Real Estate, I guess, have achieved St. Vincent levels of indie big time. Like Ms. Clark, the band and their label engaged in a bit of buzz-building, taking to their Instagram account over the last two weeks or so to reveal bits and pieces of what would eventually be the artwork for their upcoming third LP, Atlas. Then, throughout yesterday, Real Estate revealed short snippets of the record's first single, culminating in a midnight release of "Talking Backwards."

Hailing from the fertile musical ground of Bergen County's Ridgewood / Glen Rock area that gave us other bands like Titus Andronicus, Vivian Girls, La Sera, and Spook Houses, Real Estate have earned their place as a Big Indie Band with their first two excellent LPs. "Talking Backwards" features the band's trademark of layer upon layer of deceptively simple guitar parts that, together, add up to their complex yet easygoing style of dream pop.

The song itself is a relatively simple piece about the difficulty of communication. But in that same "greater than the sum of its parts" vein, "Talking Backwards" recalls some of Real Estate's best work as Martin Courtney's quiet vocals play nicely off of the jangle and reverb.

I kid Real Estate about the marketing in the run-up to the release of "Talking Backwards" and Atlas. As a matter of fact, I got to hear many of the songs that will make up the record at the band's final Maxwell's show back in July; and it would be great to see the album make it into the hands of as many people as possible.

Atlas is due out on Domino Records on March 4th.
