Kevin Drew , Darlings, 2014

Album Review

You wore my hands out”

He's selling body butter. No. For real. Tequila lime. The center of the Broken Social Scene has other passions and body butter is one of them  -- and, apparently, according to some mild research, also beard tonic. I shall remain tonic free for the time being. Still, this promo video is genius.

I can't not mention that I loved Broken Social Scene -- some of the best shows I went to over the last 15 years. Roving lineups of friends and creative partners made each show seem more like a review than a traditional band.

“Hey, you guys wanna go on tour? Cool! Everyone plays!”

Fifteen or so people on stage rocking out. I bought in on the love. Kevin Drew always seemed like he was in love -- in love with the sound, the band, his friends, you, me... didn't matter. They always felt like they'd play 'til they kicked us out. There was enough to drink and enough drugs to do and we could just be here together, in love. That's what I've adored.

Kevin Drew's new LP Darlings has the feel of the dreamier moments of Broken Social Scene. He's always been this modern hippie but not the kind that forms a jam band. He was weened on the Pavements, Sonic Youths and Dinosaur Jrs. -- more of an Alt-Rock hippie if you will. This time around, the guitars are layered deep within, and the emphasis is on piano and lush electronic soundscapes.

There is no question that this is Kevin Drew. Even in Broken Social Scene, he had a distinct voice. This is a headphones record, one that you climb into and let wash over you. It doesn't rise and fall but spreads wide around you and pulls you in. I've had “You Got Caught” on repeat for the last half hour. I want to hide in this song. Each listen yields a new phrase, and I know I'm blowing the lyrics; but I don't care. I've made it mine. Get your headphones and plug in and tune out.

Kevin Drew's Darlings is out now on Arts & Crafts.
