Do you have about 12 minutes? Well, there are way worse ways to spend them than by listening to the 7-track So Much For My Happy Ending by Virginia Beach quartet Pissghetti. Combining the indie-influenced pop punk of Brick Mower with the self-deprecating lyrics and deadpan vocal style of Modern Hut, So Much For My Happy Ending had me scanning Pissghetti's Bandcamp and (minimalist) Facebook pages to see whether or not they were signed to Don Giovanni. Looks like they're still free agents.
The first several tracks each come in at around a minute and a half, but manage to convey quite a bit in a short time. Opening track "Pokémon Underwear" sets the tone for the rest of the EP, pairing an upbeat, almost bubblegum tune with lyrics like "I've had time to think, and I realize that I suck." Standout "Old Virginia Beach" paints a picture of that "honeymoon is over" feeling that starts to creep into all relationships ("This time last year I wore a smile. I can't say if it was real, but I was happy for a while."); while "Earth Sucks Without You" finds frontman Vincent Castellano advising, "Keep moving on. Never forget how I was a dick."
Castellano sings about the way he wishes things could be on the relatively epic (2:32) "Tiny Hands;" and, once again, blames himself for screwing things up on "I Miss Steve."
So this is definitely emo, but So Much For My Happy Ending is also fun. There's humor in the lyrics with pop culture references to E.T., Sega Genesis, and Blues Clues. While Castellano's delivery gives off the easy-going, laid back vibe of Stephen Malkmus; his lyrics are much more direct, nowhere near as inscrutable. And every song comes draped in pop-punk chords and riffs with plenty of places for the listener to shout along. I mean, the band's name is Pissghetti. How much of a downer could they really be?
