Rock and Roll Hair

Photo Essay, I Guess

Taking pictures of indie rock bands gets you lots of images of people just kind of standing there. Every once in a while, I try to liven things up by turning the camera or the photo to some weird angle; but I'm kind of an indie rock photographer myself in that my pictures tend to be pretty straightforward documents of what happened.

It's cool, though, when someone does something to liven up the shot naturally. I find that "Rock and Roll Hair" is one of the best things for this. Sometimes I try to catch it, but I usually end up getting it by accident.

Here's a collection of some "Rock and Roll Hair" shots from the last year or so. I probably could've done a whole collection just on The Battery Electric -- especially Alex Rosen who gets shouted at on the street by kids in passing cars praising his locks -- but I decided to mix it up. There are bands like The Battery Electric and Diarrhea Planet whose manes start flying around from the first note. Then there are the people without particularly long hair -- like Screaming Females' Marissa Paternoster or GayGuy / StraightGuy's Bob Paulos -- who generate such huge amounts of energy that even their shorter haircuts get moving. And I had to include King Khan's wig.

Anyway, thought this would be fun.
