Premiere: New Singles from Brooklyn's Doctor Barber

"Hungry the Parasite" b/w "Hogjaw"

Last fall, I came across the Sick Sad World EP from Brooklyn's Doctor Barber. On that record, the band did that thing I love so much where they hide some definite pop sensibilities beneath a squall of noise.

Today, Doctor Barber are back with a pair of new tracks once again produced by Oliver Ignatius at Mama Coco's Funky Kitchen. This time around, both "Hungry the Parasite" and "Hogjaw" lean more to the psychedelic or spacey side of things with singer / songwriter / guitarist, Ethan Donway, maybe channeling a bit of Bowie in his vocals.

A-side (I guess) "Hungry the Parasite"  -- which, according to Donway, "is literally about parasites. It's not an un-clever metaphor." -- is the more sprawling of the two tracks, weaving between epic crescendos and spaced out guitar jams. "Hogjaw" rumbles along like the Viet Nam War-era vehicle for which it's named.

Joining Donway on this release are Sam Bravermen on drums, Mark Laura on guitar, and Desi Joseph on bass. Together, the foursome achieve a sound that's a little more psych than the grunge of the last effort; but you can still sense an attention to songcraft bubbling up from the stew.

Check out both "Hungry the Parasite" and "Hogjaw" below. You can catch Doctor Barber live at Brooklyn's Gutter on May 12th.
