Premiere: New Single From Paper Streets

Artwork: Krista Filardo

"Once More with Feeling"

Brooklyn / New Jersey quartet, Paper Streets, are giving us the first taste of their upcoming Simple Silver Stars EP today with the release of single "Once More with Feeling." This song hits some serious points of specialness with me. First, the song takes its title from, perhaps, the greatest episode of one of the greatest television shows of all time. Buffy the Vampire Slayer's "Once More with Feeling" was the realization of Joss Whedon's dream to do one of the episodes as a musical; and, to me anyway, it was a runaway success. Second, the band recorded the song and EP with Mitch Easter at Fidelitorium Recording Studio in North Carolina. Easter produced or had a hand in several of the very most important albums in my life, from the early 80s records of R.E.M. to The Connells' Boylan Heights to Pavement and many more.

The collaboration here takes Paper Streets to another level. The northwestern indie rock influence (read Modest Mouse) is still there, but there's a new subtlety in singer Cody Ste Marie's delivery. The rest of the band play into that as the opening guitar feedback gives way to something more easygoing and dreamy.

Paper Streets will release "Once More with Feeling" to Spotify tomorrow with other streaming platforms soon to follow. You can stream it a day early right here and even go grab it at Paper Streets' Bandcamp page. Simple Silver Stars should be available by mid-summer on cassette followed a little later by a vinyl pressing.

You can catch Paper Streets live next Saturday, May 14th, when they play Brooklyn's Shea Stadium as part of an excellent bill that also includes Horse Jumper Of Love, Sioux Falls, and Timeshares.
