Ides of May

CoolMom is out of town again on another couple of business trips. I'll be scrambling to find coverage at home if I want to make it out to any shows this weekend. There are a ton of things to do, so I'm gonna have to see what I can work out.

The weekend -- and the Garden State Beard & Mustache Society's "Weekend of Weird" -- kicks off on Thursday night when Little Dickman Records bring Nashville's Thelma & The Sleaze to Asbury Park Yacht Club for a free show that also features The Off White. Up in Jersey City, The Citizen hosts Vundabar, Din, Rita Fishbone, and Super City. It's the penultimate show at New Brunswick's Naner Manor with Wyland, Rose Boulevard, The Honey Hounds, and Cherry Mellow.

Friday the 13th brings another Aloha Friday to Anchor's Bend in Asbury with The Primitive Finks. Dan Waszay & The Blackouts play APYC with Hand Of Weed. House of Independents has a tribute to Prince, Michael Jackson, and James Brown done by The Souper Groove All-Stars. The Cucumbers reunite to play the monthly Rent Party show to fight hunger with Bern & The Brights and The Thousand Pines. Stolen Rhodes, The Hawkeyes, and Black Brant come to The Saint. Accidental Seabirds celebrate the release of their latest CD at The Stone Pony with Thomas Wesley Stern, Emily Grove, The Beatrix Potter Band, and The Big Drops. If you have a ticket (and a whole lot of stamina), you can catch the sold-out Modern Baseball release show at Wonder Bar that features six (SIX!) opening bands -- Sorority Noise, Pinegrove, W.C. Lindsay, Superweaks, The Obsessives, and Sun Organ. That one's a rare all-ages event at Wonder Bar.

On Saturday night, gods and The Cold Seas play for free at APYC. Lowlight, Franics Lombardi, and Colton Kayser are next door at Langosta. The Remember Jones Soul Revue & Dance Party happens in Convention Hall. Marshall Crenshaw comes to House of Independents. Philly's Free Cake For Every Creature (who released a wonderful album in April) play New Brunswick's Kremlin with Longbeard, Fraternal Twin, Tall Friend, and Rhea. It's the last-ever show at Naner Manor with Semiotics, ROMP, dollys, steve., and girl hands. Andrew Dice Clay plays The Paramount in Asbury. Animal Collective are at Starland. Paper Streets are at Brooklyn's Shea Stadium with Horse Jumper, Sioux Falls, and Timeshares. Shrewsbury's Christ Church has Teenage Halloween, Have A Good Season, Corrina Corrina, Ghost Camp, and Lunch Ladies. Smalltalk are back to play the first Asbury Lanes Family Pop Up Show at Parlor Gallery. Joining them on that bill are Pkew Pkew Pkew and The Great American Satan.

Also on Saturday, The Garden State Beard and Mustache Society hosts its main event, The 5th Annual Garden State Beard & 'Stache Competition, at The Stone Pony. CoolDad Music is sponsoring the "CoolDad Stubble" category on that one, so it's an excuse for me not to shave for a few days. Like I need one.

Also also on Saturday, it's the 5th Annual Pushing Up The Daisies festival to benefit The Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery. That one features Cicada Radio, Darkwing, No Pasaran, The RockNRoll Hi-Fives, and more. Dentist, Bern & The Brights, and Wild Moon play the after-party at Porta JC.

Deal Casino start their weekly residency at APYC on Sunday evening. Say Anything play Starland.

That is a big, big weekend of weirdness, a farewell to Naner Manor, and more. I hope I can find a sitter.
