Friday Round-Up Time w/ Lost Boy?, The Valery Trails, Jon Caspi and The First Gun But Not Dinosaur Jr. (Yet)

Lost Boy? released the title track from Goose Wazoo earlier this week.

Check These Out

It's been kind of a busy day, and I haven't been able to get to some things I wanted to today, but I didn't want to head into the weekend without drawing your attention to a few new and noteworthy bits.

Lost Boy? "Goose Wazoo"

Recent Little Dickman Records / State Capital Records signee, Lost Boy?, released the title track from their upcoming Goose Wazoo earlier this week. The album is a concept album of sorts about a gumshoe who's also a blob.

Lost Boy? mastermind, Davey Jones, has a way with noisy, left-of-center pop music, and "Goose Wazoo" -- in both sound and subject matter -- is no different. Tinged with hints of surf and garage rock, "Goose Wazoo" sounds like the theme song to a strange and cool animated series that you'd rush home to watch after school.

The song also comes with a lyric sheet in the form of a comic. Goose Wazoo is out on September 9th.

Jon Caspi and The First Gun, "Hopelessly Devoted"

New Jersey punks, Jon Caspi and The First Gun, are back with their first single since "Sun" which featured Dez Cadena. "Hopelessly Devoted" is a fast-paced kiss-off to a narcissist featuring lyrics like "Well have you noticed? you're hopelessly devoted to you" and "There are just two in your life. First there's you, then there's... you."

"Hopelessly Devoted" is an online-only release for now, available at the band's Bandcamp page. You can see Jon Caspi and The First Gun when they play live at APYC on August 13th.

The Valery Trails, Chameleon Bones

This one came to me with the description "RIYL: Bob Mould, R.E.M., Dinosaur Jr." Well, okay then.

The Valery trails are a trio based partly in Houston, TX and partly in Brisbane, Australia. The distance has made live shows a rarity, but the wonders of electronic communication have fueled the band members' collaboration. The Houston-based Andrew Bower recruited his brother Sean along with Dan McNaulty from his hometown back in Australia. Together the trio have produced three albums working mostly remotely from one another. Their latest, Chameleon Bones, really is a collection of songs that mine many of the sounds that I have loved for decades.

Single and opener "OK" is hooky, power pop. "Cordless" layers on the guitars and the fuzz; and "Fall Around" takes that even further, slipping into shoegazey / noisy dreampop. Album closer, "Change My World," relies on some distorted jangle to create its atmosphere.

Chameleon Bones does remind me of the ways in which Bob Mould, mostly with Sugar and on his later records, mixes noise, distortion, and loudness with a mastery of pop songwriting. This is one you should definitely check out. It came out today, and you can get it at Valery Trails' Bandcamp page.

NOTE: Dinosaur Jr.'s latest, Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not, came out today. I haven't had a chance to spend much time with it, so I'll get back to you on that one.
