What's Going On: 5/11, 5/12, 5/13 & 5/14, 2017

A 2013 incarnation of The Everymen. Very early in my blogging / picture-taking career. They hang it up on Saturday night.

MOM

Sunday is Mother's Day. Big thank you and endless love to my own very cool mom and to CoolMom. Remember all the mothers and / or people -- aunts, grandmothers, sisters, friends, even dads -- who may have had to act as a mother in your life. We couldn't do any of it without them.

You can raise a toast to those who have mothered you starting on Thursday when Magic Mountain, Overlake, and Secretary Legs hit Long Branch's Brighton Bar. Everymen, Ellen and The Degenerates, Teenage Halloween, and Mikey Erg are at Cape House in Brooklyn. The Dollyrots play The Saint with Cryptkeeper Five. CBDB, Waiting On Mongo, and Des & The Swagmatics are at Wonder Bar.

On Friday, Julian Fulton & The Zombie Gospel celebrate the release of their latest at APYC with Yawn Mower and Illiterate Light. Brighton Bar hosts Parasites, The Fiendz, Aristocants, Accelerators, and Nervous Triggers. Kevin Devine is at House of Independents in Asbury with dollys and Adult Mom. Overlake play NYC's Mercury Lounge for the release of their second LP. Joining them are Dead Stars and Heaven. Sunshine & The Rain hold their own release party at Piano's in New York with Tris McCall, The Porchistas, and Fascinations Grand Chorus. Centennials, Lowlight, Fun While You Wait, Casino Sundae, and Jeff Linden and The Black Spot Society are at The Saint. Mint 400 Records host another night at Stosh's in Fair Lawn with Delicate Flowers, Kult Of Mary, Quality Living, Ruby Bones, Fairmont, and Jeff Brando.

Also on Friday, CoolDad Music is back at The Asbury Hotel's Soundbooth Bar. That one features legit CoolDad faves Fruit & Flowers, Dentist, and Algebra II. FxF and Dentist will be paring things back just a little with acoustic / electric sets. Algebra II will be bringing it full-band. Should be a great evening of free music and chill vibes.

On Saturday night, The Everymen play their last-ever show at Jersey City's Monty Hall. They'll be joined by The RockNRoll HiFives and NO ICE. I just want to say that The Everymen have meant a lot to CoolDad Music over the years. Frontman Mike V has contributed here, and the site kind of grew up as the band transformed themselves into a wild, touring machine.

There was the night The Everymen opened for Death at Le Poisson Rouge, and I walked out into the New York night afterwards bruised and sweating. There was the night, during the final weeks at Maxwell's when the band played well past 2AM, and I had some serious explaining to do to my parents when we rolled in after 3. There was the night at The Saint that things turned into a wild covers set featuring a band made up of Richard Bacchus, Mike V on drums, and members of The Battery Electric. There was our first-ever show in the old Asbury Park Carousel building with Mike V dropping F-bombs as he read out Women's World Cup scores to the families who had gathered for some free Sunday afternoon music.

I have difficulty believing that we won't hear something from The Everymen in the future, but Saturday is the last thing they have planned in their illustrious career. It should be a wild one.

OK. More Saturday. The Tide Bends play APYC with Stained Glass. Face To Face and Lost In Society play a sold-out House of Independents. That's followed by a not-sold-out after-party with Pete Steinkopf spinning tunes. In a big weekend for releases, Tara Dente holds her own celebration at Langosta Lounge with Rachel Ana Dobken, Pamela Flores, and Cranston Dean.  The Feelies play Brooklyn's Rough Trade. Our friends BOYTOY open for the legendary Midnight Oil at a sold-out Webster Hall.

Noise in the Attic is back at The Inkwell in Long Branch on Sunday with Phoebe Nix, MACK, Ketih Monacchio, Jessie McKormick, and Jacob Schneck. Yucky Duster, Le Rug (ft. Conor Meara of Roy Orbitron on bass), Stringer, and ex-mothers play Brooklyn's Sunnyvale. Millhill Basement in Trenton has Jon Snodgrass, Mikey Erg, Steveo and The Crippling Addictions, and Logan Carpenter.

Thank you again to my wonderful mother and to CoolMom. I love you both.
