"New York Made Me"
Not that it was any of my doing, but I've always taken it as a point of pride that my birth certificate pins me as a native New Yorker. I was born in Brooklyn; and, every time I drive over the Verrazano Bridge with the CoolDaughters, I make sure to remind them. I also went to college in Manhattan; and, looking back, I can't imagine having had any other type of college experience. New York City made me who I am today, and a love of music and just the general energy of the place keeps drawing me back.
Rochester's The Heroic Enthusiasts express a similar sentiment in the video for their single "New York Made Me." The band say, "We would not be who we are if not for the time we have lived and spent in New York City. 'New York Made Me' is a tribute to 'The City' for instilling worldwide resilience and the will to endure."
A four-piece formed back in 2014 by James Tabbi and Thomas Ferrara, The Heroic Enthusiasts -- with the later additions of Mike James and Dexter Redic -- have a sound that's deeply-rooted in 80s new wave. Think of bands like INXS or The Church who integrated the sounds of straight-up rock and pop with the early-80s new / dark wave formula. In the video for "New York Made Me," The Heroic Enthusiasts show their commitment to their aesthetic, dark suits, skinny ties, sunglasses and all.
"New York Made" me appears on the band's upcoming self-titled debut. Mixed by Mercury Rev's Anthony Molina, who's also worked with Jesse Hale Moore and Sondre Lerche, The Heroic Enthusiasts is due on 10/20 from Bodan Kuma.
