Smock, Interstellar Nobody, 2018

EP Review

I always knew that the weekend was gonna be tough for my "Seven Albums in Seven Days" challenge. We had CoolDaughter 2's softball playoff game this morning (They won!). I took a long bike ride. We all went to dinner. A 4-song EP it is!

Bloomfield, NJ's Smock just released their debut EP on Sniffling Indie Kids, and Interstellar Nobody is a relentless barrage of psychedelic stoner rock. On the doomy title track, Jesse Benicaso's vocals bubble up from beneath the band's punishing wall of sound. "Weird One" and "High Life" up the tempo significantly. "Weird One" is frantic Ty Segall or Thee Oh Sees style psychedelia, while "High Life" brings elements of punk and post-punk into the mix. "Bleach" is the only song here -- surprising for a psych rock record -- that exceeds three minutes. It's the closest Interstellar Nobody gets to an extended jam as it moves forward on a steady beat, punctuated by moments of total abandon.

Smock bring elements of metal, punk, and krautrock to the psych rock formula. Despite sounding like they could go off the rails at any moment, Smock clearly know how to rein themselves in and keep things in control. That all makes Interstellar Nobody a quick but cathartic listen.

Interstellar Nobody is out now on Sniffling Indie Kids.
