One of my favorite places on the East Coast is Woodstock NY. Even though the infamous festival never happened there, the nostalgia of an era of music, tie dye, and patchouli lives on in the streets of Woodstock. My first relationship with music was classic rock and the hippie culture I pretended to be part of 30 years too late. I always fall right back to my roots when I visit even though I retired the tie dye.

It's no secret that I love Screaming Females and have found myself following them a lot this year. When I heard they were going to play in Woodstock, the 2 hr drive was not inconvenient, especially since Spowder would be opening up for them. This would be my third time seeing Spowder open up for Screaming Females. I phoned a friend and said, "Let's go up the country."

So we didn't play the actual Canned Heat song but we headed up to The Colony. It was a very interesting looking bar with its intimate lighting and wooden balcony. It was going to be a loud show for such a quaint venue. Maybe Bethel will hear the rumble.

Kyle and The Pity Party opened up the show and seemed more fitting with the atmosphere of headbands and birkenstocks. Their melancholy strums and beats had me feeling like it was time to maybe put some of those old records on. That didn’t last too long as Spowder disrupted the show with their fast punk drive. I especially love watching lead singer Declan McCleary push the cinderblock up against the bass drum in between songs because Jenna Fairey is a powerhouse behind the drums. They shredded through tunes from their last album Health Palm. If you don't own a copy then, it’s time to get on it if you want to be one of the cool kids.

Next up was the main reason for the drive up past the Jersey state line. I can't really say much about a band that never seems to disappoint. Marissa will shred through songs with extra riffs and always get me pumped especially when they decide to play "Ripe" from Rose Mountain. The crowd was pushing about, but when Marissa threw down the mic stand, I ran for some cover. The crowd took off and the music got louder and more energized only to lead us to yelling and stomping for an encore. They came back out and played "I'll Make You Sorry" and their live take on "Deeply" from their latest album, All at Once.

I always leave these shows pumped with adrenaline. I was most appreciative of that as I needed it this night for the long drive back. I took a minute to look up at the sky to actually see the stars, and I thanked the rock gods for always introducing me to these amazing indie bands that blast through my car speakers to fill the silence of long summer drives.

CoolDad Notes: You can check out the rest of Rosi's shots from this show over at Flickr. Screaming Females will be coming back to Asbury Park on August 3rd as part of the Stoked for the Summer pre-party at House of Independents. They'll be supporting Paint It Black with help from HIRS, GIVE, and Bacchae. Something tells me that Rosi and I might be there.
