New Baboons, New Baboons, 2015

Album Review

New Baboons are my favorite new band.

I discovered the band a few weeks ago when I followed another band on Twitter and was shown New Baboons as another group I should follow. I went to their Twitter account and, in their timeline, found a link to their Bandcamp page. So I streamed a few of the songs and was so knocked out that I bought and downloaded the album. I listened to the album three times that day.

New Baboons are from Kansas City, Missouri, and consist of Josh Klipsch on drums, Tom Livesay on bass and vocals, Paige Newcomer on keyboards, Adam Scheffler on guitars and vocals, and Elliot Seymour also on guitars and vocals.

This album is their self-titled debut, and it’s terrific. It’s simultaneously lo-fi and incredibly melodic.

A major touchstone for the New Baboons' release is the Velvet Underground, especially that band’s Loaded album. On the first New Baboons song, “Sci-fi Runaway,” they lift the guitar riff from the Velvets' “Rock & Roll” and add some shoegazing elements to the mix. The song “Dress” has a very VU guitar opening, and the lead vocal is very much in the Lou Reed mode.

“Worm In The Apple” is a nod to 60s garage rock along with Carl Wilson‘s vocals on the Beach Boys Wild Honey album. “Get Christie Love” is pure pop, and “The Victor” rocks with some terrific guitar bits.

You can download New Baboons album on their Bandcamp page.
