Premiere: New Video from Sean Kiely

Sean Kiely by Victoria Stevens

"It Sure Was Good"

This past spring, Sean Kiely released the four-song It Sure Was Good. When lined up with the rest of his catalog -- some of which we've featured here -- It Sure Was Good cements Kiely's position as one of New Jersey's premier singer / songwriters. Kiely combines intricate guitar work with a spare lyrical style that somehow manages to convey layers of meaning, giving listeners a contemplative experience that deepens with repeat listens.

Today, we're sharing the Hannah Subotnick-animated video for the EP's title track.

"'It Sure Was Good' is the title track and emotional center of the record," says Kiely. "Jonny Lam's steel guitar swells and Bobby McCullough's bowed bass create an unsettling, pulsing beauty, deepening lyrical themes of gratitude and love within loss and desertion."

"As for the video, I had nothing to do with the making of it. I left it entirely in the director's hands. It's an impressionistic stop motion animation by a gifted young animator, Hannah Subotnick. She found a way to match the vibe of the song without needing to follow any linear narrative. I think it's beautifully done, and she brought her vision and style to the song in an artful and emotionally resonant way."

The clip is masterful; and, as Kiely suggests, it fits the vibe of "It Sure Was Good" to a T.

Check it out right here.

You can see Sean Kiely perform live, before he heads back into the studio, when he plays Rockwood Music Hall in New York on Thursday, September 13th.
