Earlier this month, New Brunswick's The Clydes released So The Story Goes on Mint 400 Records. Comprised of brothers Brent (guitar, vocals, keys) and Brian Johnson (lead guitars, keyboards, effects), Andrew Lord Chandler (bass, keys, backing vocals), and MadMardigan (drums, backing vocals), The Clydes play alt pop that owes quite a bit to classic rock, the jangly sounds of the late 80s, and even Brit Pop.

The Clydes cite Brit Pop as one of the influences for single "Holly Speaks." It's a relatable song about the struggle to keep moving forward instead of sitting idly as life passes you by. The band recently released a video for the track directed by Mint 400 label head, Neil Sabatino. It stars Brittney On Fire, a familiar face to anyone who's spent any time around New Jersey music over the last several years.



The Clydes play a free So The Story Goes release show tonight, 10/30, at Wonder Bar. Joining them on the bill are Quality Living and C.R. & The Degenerates.

Dentist hit the beach at Anchor's Bend tonight as part of a beautiful and stacked Monday night in Asbury.

Just a quick note to point out that there are two great Asbury Park shows tonight for what looks like it's gonna be a beautiful evening to be down by the beach.

Little Dickman Records Presents Dentist / Las Piñas / Partner at Anchor's Bend, 7pm, FREE

Little Dickman Records continue their summer-long 5th anniversary celebration (and a big few days) when they bring a truly international trio of bands to the beach at Anchor's Bend. The free show kicks off at 7pm and features our good good buds and Little Dickman recording artists, Dentist.



Joining them on the bill are Las Piñas, a surf duo on tour all the way from Argentina.



Rounding things out for this one is Windsor, Ontario duo, Partner. They describe themselves as post-classic-rock. Whatever they do, it sounds pretty good.

Over at Wonder Bar, the rejuvenated Happy Mondays series goes punk with sets from Nervous Triggers,

Well Wisher Released a Pair of Tracks and Played Wonder Bar with Weakened Friends, Doc Emmett, and The North American, 11/14/16

Last Night, I Said, "I'll Go"

Well Wisher are Natalie Newbold and Erik Kase Romero of dollys along with Mike Linardi of ROMP, Toy Cars, and more. Last night they played their very first show, and it came hot on the heels of the release of their first two singles. Unsurprisingly, Well Wisher display a knack similar to dollys for tightly-crafted pop; but Well Wisher's approach is definitely more power pop / rock and roll.

Well Wisher were joined on last night's bill by Portland, ME's Weakened Friends, Doc Emmett -- a project featuring members of Toy Cars and Goodbye Tiger, and The North American. It was a solid evening of East Coast indie rock and one of the most well-attended Monday nights at Wonder Bar in a while.

Goodbye Blue Monday

CoolMom and I will still be in New Orleans this coming Monday, and I'll be missing a couple of really good, free, local shows. I'm not complaining. I mean, New Orleans. Plus, I won't have to choose between some solid bills. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to head out to one or both of these, have a great time, and tell me what I missed the next time you see me.

Little Dickman Records Presents: Surfbort, Darkwing, The Off White at Asbury Park Yacht Club, 8pm, FREE

I saw Brooklyn's Surfbort at SXSW. They played an early, indoor set at Cheer Up Charlie's in Austin. They call themselves SLIMY ICE-CREEEM LICKIN FILTH ROCK, and that just about sums it up. Vocalist Dani Miller is a weird, wild force of nature; and -- rounded out by our friends Darkwing and The Off White -- it should be a pretty interesting evening at the Yacht Club to say the least.







Happy Mondays: Dentist, Beams, Fun While You Wait at Wonder Bar, 8pm, FREE

Dentist are back at Happy Mondays this coming week. They'll be joined by Toronto's Beams and Freehold's Fun While You Wait on an eclectic bill that mixes Dentist's 90s and surf-influenced rock, with Beams's dark psych folk, and Fun While You Wait's ukulele-fronted pop.

My love for Dentist is well-documented here. Beams bring seven members, a singing saw, and the experience of having recorded their last EP with John McEntire (Yo La Tengo, Stereolab, Broken Social Scene). Fun While You Wait deliver upbeat folk pop fronted by Devon Moore's ukulele and soulful voice.







So, I don't want to hear any crap about how it's a school night or you have work in the morning. Free music. Cheap beer. Toughen up.

New Video from YJY. Playing Wonder Bar for Happy Mondays TONIGHT, 1/25, with Deaf Rhino and Doug Zambon

"Amelia"

Last week, our good friends in Hightstown's YJY premiered the excellent video for Couch Surfin' USA track "Amelia" with our other good friends at Speak Into My Good Eye. Directed by Dean Luis Chuqui and edited by YJY's own Ricky Lorenzo with added VHS footage from bandmate Steve Sachs, "Amelia" features Steve Sachs taking exceptionally good care of a 1974 Volkswagen Beetle.

Over in the SIMGE write-up, YJY drummer Dave Sachs mentions experimental filmmaker Kenneth Anger as inspiration. It would appear that Anger's "Kustom Kar Kommandos" was the most direct inspiration for the clip, but the split screen shots, the fiery color palette of "Amelia," and that Steve Sachsian je ne sais quoi are all YJY-specific touches.

Check out the video for "Amelia" below and then snowshoe it on over to Wonder Bar this evening where the guys play a free show as part of a solid bill that also includes Deaf Rhino and the always lovely Doug Zambon of The Vansaders.

Getting Back Into It

It's been kind of a slow start for me here since the holidays. I'm rolling some new ideas for CoolDad Music around in my mind and trying to kick things back into gear. When I saw that one of my favorites, Sink Tapes, were playing Happy Mondays last night, I figured that it was a great excuse to get out, hear some music, and take some pictures. Also on last night's bill were perennial weekly listings denizens, Centennials, and the new project of Joshua Mark, Smoking Loon.

I always enjoy a chance to catch a band like Centennials, whose name I see week after week, for the first time. They delivered a kinetic set of ambient indie rock and closed the evening out on a high note. Sink Tapes drew from their vast catalog of songs for a set that was short on conversation but long on great sounds. Smoking Loon were a solid acoustic opener, and it will be interesting to see what they do next.

You can catch Centennials at The Stone Pony on January 22nd. Sink Tapes just left for a tour that goes through January 13th. We'll have to wait and see what Smoking Loon get up to next.

Cicada Radio Kicked off Their Tour at Wonder Bar with New Strange and Negative Traction, 10/26/15

Happy Monday

It had been 10 days since I got out to a show. The closure of a very important venue in Asbury Park has had me re-calibrating a little bit, and I've been spending a little more time with the CoolFam. It's been nice, but I was feeling a little bit of an itch last night. Once I saw that Cicada Radio were playing this week's Happy Monday, I decided to head out. At the end of last year, Cicada Radio released the very strong Crimewaves on Killing Horse Records. This was, surprisingly, my first time seeing them since; and they did not disappoint.

The Jersey City quartet are departing for a tour with Cincinnati's New Strange who joined them on the bill last night. Also part of last night's line-up were Belmar punks Negative Traction. It was a loud, sometimes rowdy, evening and a nice kickoff to what will likely be a busy week.

The Jolly Daggers Played Happy Mondays w/ Chris Brown, Psychiatric Metaphors, and The Off White

Yo Ho Ho

It was a staycation Happy Monday for me last night as I wasn't going to miss The Jolly Daggers for a second time. The Pirate-themed quartet of Ron Santee, Robbie Butkowski, Boris Thertus, and Sweet Joey were playing their second official show with help from folk-punk troubadour Chris Brown and psych rockers Psychiatric Metaphors and The Off White.

While the Daggers did have one song with a "Yo ho ho" in it, the pirate theme applied mostly to their outfits. The rest of the set was some surf and rockabilly-inspired garage rock that had the late crowd moving in the uncharacteristically warm Wonder Bar.

Both Psychiatric Metaphors and The Off White blew the place away with a squall of wonderfully messy noise, while Chris Brown gave us acoustic selections from his catalog as well as renditions of "Happy Birthday" and "In My Life" for a woman named Nikki who was celebrating her sixth annual 21st birthday.

Wonder Bar

I posted an interview with Hightstown, NJ's YJY earlier today and included a bunch of pictures from their set at Wonder Bar on Monday night. There were two more bands on the bill for this most recent edition of Happy Mondays: Chevy Lopez and Paper Streets.

Chevy Lopez are a Brooklyn six-piece fronted by vocalist Lexi Todd. She has pipes to spare, and the rest of the band showed some serious musical chops during their set of soulful R&B. Our buddies in the Jackson / Brooklyn quartet of Paper Streets celebrated guitarist Stephen Stec's birthday by releasing a new single, "Under the Weather," and by turning in a solid set of indie / post-punk.

Get in the Van

This past Monday night, Hightstown's YJY took to the Wonder Bar stage for their first performance within the borders of Asbury Park. They closed out an evening that also featured the soulful stylings of Chevy Lopez and the indie pop sounds of Paper Streets. Even as a relatively unknown commodity locally and even after a few difficulties with broken guitar strings and finicky pedals, YJY won over the late night crowd. I, honestly, got a lot of those "These guys are good!" looks from friends in the crowd during YJY's set.

Afterwards, the foursome stayed a little late so that we could pile into my minivan for a chat about their upcoming EP, Couch Surfin USA. We hit on several other topics as well, including the meaning of the band's name, their songwriting process, and another great project that all of the guys are involved with called Carriage House TV.

Set aside some time to listen to my interview with YJY below. I've even included some pictures from the evening for you to browse as you listen.

Couch Surfin USA will be aviailable on July 7th from Sniffling Indie Kids, and YJY will be back in Asbury Park on August 2nd for a show at Asbury Lanes with The Cold Seas, Campdogzz, and NGHTCRWLRS.

Overlake were back in Asbury Park for Happy Mondays.

Happy Mondays

The weather's warming up and the crowds at Wonder Bar's weekly Happy Mondays series are starting to grow. It wasn't just the weather, I'm sure. Last night's bill included three excellent and very different bands.

Hailing from that Bergen County rock mecca of Glen Rock, Deaf Rhino brought their heavy (and LOUD) rock music that ranged from 1990s-inspired alt-rock to heavy jams. Overlake didn't give anyone's eardrums a break as they mesmerized again with their whirling shoegaze. New Brunswick's Sink Tapes rattled off Pollard-like indie pop gem after indie pop gem to close things out.

I've got lots of stuff to work on over the next couple of days, so I'll just leave you with with some pics from last night. The rest of the shots are up at Flickr.

"New Pony"

Last night's Happy Mondays installment brought together the fiddle-enhanced rock of Roy Orbitron, the funky, feel good vibes of Des and The Swagmatics, and the outlaw country of Lowlight. I'll post pics from all of the sets later today.

Lowlight gave a preview during their set of what they'll be doing when they return to The Wonder Bar this Friday, May 22nd, to help kick off the summer as part of the 70s-themed cover show presented by Dark City Entertainment. That show will feature Amy Malkoff & The Moonshines (Led Zeppelin), Creeptones (Queen), King Mosquito (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), and Feathers In The Shade doing a 1970-79 medley. Lowlight will be bringing it with an entire set of Bob Dylan.

Last night the band went a little Street-Legal with some help from The Vaughns' Anna Lies during a cover of Dylan's "New Pony." Watch that clip below, and watch this space for some shots from the rest of the night.

"Eat Your Cake"

So you've had your coffee, and you're into your morning. Maybe you're dragging a bit. It's not Monday or anything; but, on Tuesday, the weekend still seems pretty far away. Well, here's something that should give you a nice kick in the ass.

GayGuy / StraightGuy played last night's Happy Mondays along with Dentist and The Cold Seas. Here's video of the duo of Bob Paulos (drums) and Nick Cucci (guitar) performing "Eat Your Cake," the first track from their upcoming LP, Shut Your Mouth and Eat Your Cake. I've tried to convey to you in the past just how loud and intense these two can get live. I figured I'd provide you with some visual proof.

Shoegaze and Surprise Guests

Jersey City's Overlake, one of the bands that graciously played the Little Dickman Records / CoolDad Music holiday benefit at the end of last year, were back in Asbury Park last night to kick off the latest edition of Happy Mondays. I'm a sucker for shoegaze, and Overlake are making some of my favorite sounds right now. They even do their own take on an mbv-like "holocaust section," filling the venue with a few minutes of sustained noise. So awesome.

Also on the bill were I Have Been Floated, who turned in a set of psychedelic jams, and The Drive Home. The Drive Home, unfortunately, had to cancel; but Deal Casino's Joe Parella stepped up to do a short fill-in acoustic slot ahead of his own band's free video release show tonight at The Stone Pony. After Parella, talented songwriter, Vansaders frontman, and Happy Mondays regular Doug Zambon treated the remaining crowd to a few of his own songs.

I'm a pretty absent-minded person, and I'm pretty sure it isn't age related. I took a few shots at a very dark Brooklyn venue on Saturday; and, last night, I forgot to set my camera's ISO back to a more reasonable level. I did the whole show at 6400, which is totally unnecessary for the stage at Wonder Bar. It gave me a chance, though, to see how my mirrorless camera performs at such a high setting; and, while it isn't ideal, I think it did a pretty good job.

Happy Monday

Someone told me yesterday that AccuWeather says this will be our last week with daily highs below 40 degrees. That's something to hang your hat on, I guess, as we hear rumblings of something wintry and unpleasant approaching us on Thursday.

Sink Tapes

On Saturday, following the Screaming Females release show over at Brooklyn's Knitting Factory, I slipped and slid my way on top of some stubborn sheets of ice over to The Gutter to see if I could catch two of my New Jersey favorites, New Brunswick's Sink Tapes and our friends from Jersey City in Overlake. I did make it in time to hear the last few songs of Sink Tapes' set, and I think I heard something new. I also managed to catch Overlake in all their shoegazy glory.

Even if I missed Overlake, I would have been okay since they're making one of their far too infrequent Asbury Park appearances tonight at Wonder Bar for Happy Mondays. They'll be joining The Drive Home and I Have Been Floated for another great one in the local series of free shows, which are free. The shows are free. Free.

So get over there tonight. I'll buy you a beverage, and we can listen to some great music and talk all about how great it will be when spring and summer finally get here.

We're Ghosts Now, Des and The Swagmatics, Morningside Lane Played Happy Mondays, 1/19/15 (PHOTOS)

Bergen County's Morningside Lane kicked off a fine Happy Monday last night.

Healthy, Holiday, Happy Monday

I know it's not always thrilling when I write about dad problems here. Hey. That's the brand, man. "Dad" is right there in the title.

Anyway, both cooldaughters have been laid low all weekend by some bug that causes sore throats, fevers, lots of dramatic acting. CoolDaughter 2 is on the mend and at school this morning, while CoolDaughter 1 continues to suffer in front of the TV today.

I had to get out of the house last night. As luck would have it, it was a Monday night and The Wonder Bar had a particularly strong Happy Monday on tap.

Bergen County's Morningside Lane started playing their awesomely Jersey brand of rock and roll to a relatively sparsely populated floor in front of the stage. By the end of their set, though, people had crept up front. The band engaged the crowd throughout their set, even employing Jeff Crespi as a human mic stand for part of one song. They passed out freshly-burned CDs containing both of their Pete Steinkopf-produced EPs as well as an earlier collection.

Morningside Lane gave way to Asbury's Des and The Swagmatics. The band burned up The Wonder Bar with an abundance of positive energy. Their performance of "Sunny Side" was just what I needed after a dreary couple of days. They closed things out with a faithful cover of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" that had everyone moving.

Freehold's We're Ghosts Now ended the evening with their blend of pop punk, indie rock and Americana. Guitarist Ben Resnick broke his G and B strings early on, but he pushed through with a healthy dose of power chords. Nobody in the audience seemed to notice or care about the missing strings.

When it was all done, I was exhausted but exhilarated at the same time. Morningside Lane's energy eventually brought the crowd around. Des and The Swagmatics kept up the high and even raised it a few notches. We're Ghosts Now overcame some small difficulties and turned in a great set.

At the end of it all, Speak Into My Good Eye's Chris Rotolo gave me a holiday / birthday gift. It's a shot he took at the Titus Andronicus / Screaming Females / Diarrhea Planet show we both attended back in 2012. As I've said many times, that's the first thing I ever wrote about here; and, as it turns out, it's the first known instance of Chris and me at the same show.

It's going on three years here at CoolDad Music since that show, and I'm still in awe of the ease with which we can find great music like what went on last night to lift our spirits when we need it. The blog is where it is today thanks to all of those musicians and venues and thanks to people like Chris who helped me reach a wider audience early on. I'm looking forward to continuing with everyone -- after recovering from the inevitable, debilitating illness that should hit me by the weekend -- in a big 2015.

"Dad, what's the matter?" CoolDaughter #2 asked me as we headed to the car to take her sister to swim practice.

The weather, work stuff, a combination of things did have me feeling down.

"Oh, I don't know. It's rainy, and I haven't been able to come up with anything for the blog in a couple of days. I like to post something every day, so that's a little disappointing."

"Well. Are there any shows tonight?"

"Actually, yeah, there's a show," I said.

"You should go to that. It will cheer you up, and then you'll have something to put on your blog."

My family is the best.

So, after I said what I wanted to say at our local boro council meeting like a good suburban taxpayer, I headed down to The Wonder Bar for Happy Mondays. It was a really good one for my mood, filled with rock and passion and rage and fun. TV Tramps opened and just got me even more excited for the show with Little Dickman Records on 12/14. Canada's Kill Matilda were all sweaty and shirtless by the end of their set. The Mischief Kids had the late crowd raging right along with them.

I had a couple of beverages, caught up with some friends, and took a bunch of pictures. I had fun. Here's the post. Feels good.

The Vansaders, Accidental Seabirds, Hollywood Blanks Played Happy Mondays, 10/13/14 (PHOTOS)

Guest Guitarists, Homecomings, New Friends

Two local favorites and one band from out of town made up the bill for last night's Happy Mondays at The Wonder Bar. Baltimore's Hollywood Blanks joined The Vansaders and Accidental Seabirds for an eclectic evening that saw Alex Rosen (The Battery Electric, Hot Blood) taking guest rhythm guitar duties for The Vansaders, Accidental Seabirds returning home after a monthlong tour, and Hollywood Blanks playing -- in their words -- the largest stage they've played as a band.

Each band provided something different. Hollywood Blanks gave us their expansive, psychedelic take on electric folk. Accidental Seabirds played their genre-defying jams, loud and electric this time. The Vansaders brought the evening to a close with their high-energy, barroom anthems that included a cover of Avoid One Thing's "Lean on Sheena" (Yeah. That's right. Avoid One Thing. Look it up.).

Happy Monday

I was going to use this post to say something about all the feelings I found myself having as last night progressed and how much they surprised me. Rather than get into all that, I'll just let you know how much I like Dollys. They're doing something that we really don't see that much of here on the Shore. Dollys don't do hard rock, punk, folk, prog, folk-punk-prog or any of that. They bring the harmonies and the hooks of pure indie pop.

I've seen Dollys a number of times now; and, each time, they've impressed me with their energy and just their expertise with the roughly 3-minute pop song. Also, their "dadliest jokes."

They've got an Indiegogo campaign going to fund the release of their upcoming LP through pre-orders. Dollys have less than a week left to make their goal. You should head over to the campaign page and think about maybe helping them get Oh Please! out into the world.

Trust me when I tell you that there is power in pop. And sometimes it's just what you need.

Scene Report: The Brixton Riot Played Happy Mondays, 7/21/2014

Sometimes I forget how I got here.

No, seriously. I've talked about rabbit holes in the past. I get lost on the way, forget pieces, make discoveries and lose some things. I know I've found The Brixton Riot before. I'm just not sure where. Was it the afternoon Jim turned me on to Eastern Anchors and I started clicking around? You know how that goes. Or maybe it was Leo mentioning them a bunch of times, 'cause he knows I like the Replacements. What matters is I got here and there last night for Happy Mondays at The Wonder Bar. That's right, kids: 3 shows in 4 nights. It's 1999 and we're gonna party like... Yes, I'll have a coke please.

I haven't been out on a Monday in forever, but The Wonder Bar's famed series holds it down with some solid booking. This was a great opportunity to hook up with an old friend (Leo) and to make some new ones (Jerry & Steve of TBR). The Brixton Riot hit the stage about 9.

SMOKE MACHINE! There, got that out of my system.

As the boys begin to roll through their set, I start to think they are equal parts Boston (Lemonheads / Buffalo Tom), Minneapolis (The Replacements), and New Jersey (New Jersey). Power poppy, rocking with a hint of a punk rock past. I was hooked.

"Signal To Noise," "Hard To See The Sun," "Losing Streak,” and "Fiction” were all standout tunes. With the Sudden Fiction EP and the Palace Amusements LP (a nod to Asbury) under their belts, the boys treated us to a set that also included two covers: Guided By Voices' "Best of Jill Hives" and a fully fleshed out version of The Replacements' Let It Be closer "Answering Machine." All in all a great set. On a (summer) school night!

After the show, I sat down with Jerry (guitar & vox) and Steve (bass & vox); and we talked a little about the band, records, and growing old in the indie rock world. The band is a bit spread out over the state and is in various stages of growing up, settling down, and still getting together to rock. Steve suggested that they tour New Jersey backyard BBQs. I think he might be onto something.
